Vertex from a Quadratic Equation (Standard Form) Self-Checking Digital Picture

By Cockrell's Creations Math and More

This is a digital self-checking algebra activity that addresses identifying the vertex in a quadratic equation when given the equation in standard form.
Students find the vertex in sixteen different problems in order to reveal a digital image. The problems do not need to be solved in order, but all of them must be solved correctly in order to reveal the image.

This product is made for Google Sheets. You must have access to a Google account in order to have access.

Printable task cards are also included along with answer work pages and an answer key. It may even be advisable to have students submit written work so that they are not simply guessing and checking.

Ways to use this Diagnostic:

Give out as an individual assignment

If you want to see what EACH of your students knows on an individual level, treat this as a test. Volume 0 during testing and have students work completely alone.

Put them in pairs

If you want them to talk through what they know and share knowledge with each other, put them in pairs. If you don’t mind knowing what EACH of your students knows this could be a great way to introduce partner work and your expectations.

Collaborative Assessment

This is a great way to introduce groupwork to your class in the beginning of the year. They will work together as a group. Real-Life Math fun! Geometric Series, Compound Interest and Financial Maths II

By Daniel

With this fun activity, students learn valuable real-Life Math lessons.

In this task, (with answer key), students invest $50 at the start of every month and then calculate the value of each $50 at the end of that year. The future value of an annuity like this $50 monthly investment is the real-life application of the sum of a geometric series.

Recurring investments (annuities) is a geometric series. The formula for the sum of a geometric series is therefore also the formula for the future value of an annuity. When students realize this, they never need to try to memorize two formulas. They also make the connection between the 2 sections of mathematics and realize that it is fact the same mathematics.

Arithmetic Sequences, Arithmetic Series, Geometric Sequences, Geometric Series, Compound Interest, Future Value, Present Value, Annuities, Sum of an Arithmetic Series, Sum of a Geometric Series.

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

Lots of practice to FOIL binomials well. This task builds up from basic multiplication of whole numbers to complex binomials. The six tasks build gradually in complexity and involves 1) multiplying whole numbers, 2) multiplying integers, 3) multiplying positive monomials, 4) multiplying positive and negative monomials with binomials, 5) multiplying binomials with leading coefficient of 1 and 6) multiplying binomials with leading coefficient different from 1.

Students will clarify the following topics through thorough practice:

  • multiplying positive and negative numbers
  • adding and subtracting like terms
  • exponential laws

And here is another resource on Binomials that you may not want to miss!
