This 12 slide presentation about women in the United States military in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs and posters to convey the experiences on the home front. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding beyond textbook reading. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. Use this Reading Response Assignment and Battle Royale style activity to teach about Bushcraft and Primitive Survival Techniques while reinforcing simple geographical knowledge about world geography and the basic biomes of the world. Any fan of fortnite or other battle royale style video games will love this assignment! But even the students who don't play fortnite will enjoy making their battle royale survival plan.

I normally use this assignment during my Ancient History unit on early humans as a way to help students understand the hardship of surviving without modern technology. I've also used it directly after my unit on the Fall of Rome when we discuss the collapse of civilization before diving into Feudalism in Europe.

Really this assignment is a plug and play that you can use in many different class periods. Thinking tactically about survival never goes out of style, and students are always engaged during this assignment. I've also used it as a last minute sub plan and have never gotten a bad note!

Definition:

A Mini Socratic Seminar is a scholarly discussion of an essential question in which student opinions are shared and refined through dialogue with other students in small groups. In this mini format, the teacher or seminar leader facilitates the discussion for the small groups.

Purpose:

In a Socratic Seminar, participants seek to answer an essential question and gain deeper understanding of laws, ideas, issues, values, and/or principles presented through rigorous and thoughtful dialogue

Advantages:

• Teaches respect for diverse ideas, people, and practices
• Enhances students' knowledge
• Creates a community of inquiry
• Develops critical thinking, problem solving, speaking, and listening skills
• Clarifies one's ideas, ethics and values
• Maximizes student participation
• Encourages divergent thinking

Mini Seminar Directions:

1. Students are placed in small groups or virtual break out rooms of 5-6 students.
2. Teacher poses the essential question.
3. Teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
4. The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and clarified consideration of the ideas, a respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
5. Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.
6. If dialogue slows use one of the provided questions to encourage discussion.
7. Students complete the participant checklist during the last 5 minutes of class.

Need a creative way for your students to connect, understand, retain information, and have FUN learning about a country's people, culture, landforms, strengths, weaknesses, history, future, etc.? This is the lesson for you. It is highly flexible and can be used from grades 6th through 12th, as well as in higher education. I encourage you to modify the lesson to meet the needs of your students.

This lesson can be used if you are specifically studying one country as a class or if you are focusing on a continent. If a continent, you may allow students to choose the country they would like to study.

A PowerPoint is included to assist in the instruction of using anatomy to study and discuss a country. Example: Eyes: what can be seen in the country? (Landforms, landmarks, scenery, etc.) Nose: What would scents one might smell? (Food, pollution, flowers, trees, water, conversations, language, etc.)
