Geography: Understanding Culture and Subculture Cooperative Learning

By Geography & Math Made Easy

In our global society, it is important for our students to understand how cultures are developed, and how they adapt to and adopt other practices and beliefs through diffusion.

Your students will have a great time working in cooperative groups to create a collage depicting American subcultures. This will require students to implement high-order thinking skills as they analyze, compare, and evaluate the American culture and subcultures.

In addition, students will have a short preliminary assignment and will interpret a political cartoon! This reaches visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners, grades 5th-12th grade. Yes, even the older ones will enjoy this one!

North Korea: Let's Learn about the Country of North Korea!(A Webquest)

By Gail Hennessey

Founded in 1948 by Kim II-Sung, North Korea is officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. About the size of the state of Pennsylvania, it has been nicknamed the Hermit Kingdom because it is a country that few from the outside world have visited. With North Korea being in the news a lot lately, this might be a great opportunity to introduce students to the "Hermit Kingdom".

This resource would be a great opportunity to focus on something in the news.

This web quest has 8 web questions, lots of interesting facts(did you know that North Korea has their very own time zone classification or that at one time all teachers had to learn to play the accordion? There are comprehension questions, extension activities and the key.

Additional Resource of Interest:

1. North Korea and South Korea had historic meeting where they announced the end of the Korea War, which never formally "ended" back in the 1950s.. This would be a great opportunity to introduce students to the county of South Korea. There are 11 web questions, lots of Did You Know? facts, comprehension questions and a teacher page with 7 extension activities. There is also a key for both the web quest and comprehension questions and additional links for teachers. Although the activity could be done in one class period, if you decide to do some of the extension activities, this resource could be used over several days.Let's Learn about the Country of South Korea

Geography & Social Studies Comprehension Game: Fact or Fiction?

By Geography & Math Made Easy

What a fun way to study people throughout history. My students LOVE playing this game. They couldn't wait to play it. It encourages students to use their critical thinking skills while enjoying the learning process. This is very versatile and can be used over and over.

Tired of the same old basil workbook handouts? Whether you are studying historical people or current events, this will increase student learning and improve comprehension.

This is a great way to get your students involved in their own learning, giving them autonomy, and it is an activity that can be used across the curriculum. Students will have a great time analyzing characters, acting them out, and gaining points for identifying fact or fiction. This is not only great for social studies and geography, but for any lesson in which people or characters are being studied.

Students read two Common Lit articles and observe/analyze images related to the Great Depression and Migrant workers (Links to all images and articles are provided - actual articles are NOT included. only links).

Students will observe, read, analyze, and make evidence-based inferences related to the Great Depression and the lives of migrant workers. Students will then use these texts (articles and images) to make connections to the characters / events in the book Of Mice and Men. The graphic organizers require students to cite evidence from both the articles, images, and the book to support their analysis, conclusions, and observations.

The two graphic organizers contain the same information, but one of them is differentiated for lower-level students.

✅ The differentiated version graphic organizer includes paraphrased, step-by-step instructions as well as examples of how to think about the information they observed in the images and read in the articles. These examples will increase their understanding of how to think about information and complete the graphic organizer appropriately.

Set #2: Great Depression, Dust Bowl and Migrant Workers Image Analysis Graphic Organizer Packet

These graphic organizers require students to analyze three images related to the Great Depression and Dust Bowl and draw evidence-based conclusions. The differentiated version graphic organizer includes scaffolding questions to help lower level students analyze the images and write about them. The graphic organizers also require students to cite evidence from the images to support their analysis/conclusions. The graphic organizers are visually appealing and eye catching!

These graphic organizers are excellent for Do Now, unit launch, groupwork, homework, independent work, and/or research activities. They can also be used to set a purpose for listening/watching video clips used to supplement lessons. It's a great tool to help build students' background/prior knowledge for upcoming units/topics related to the Great Depression and/or Dust Bowl.

These graphic organizers make a great addition to a lesson plan!
