World War II Historical Fiction List * World History * U.S. History * AP*
By Christa Nonnemaker
World War II fiction novels offer high school teachers a powerful tool for engaging students in historical learning. These novels provide immersive experiences that transport readers into the tumultuous era of the 1940s, allowing them to witness the human experience amidst the chaos of war. Through compelling characters and gripping narratives, students can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of the conflict, including its causes, consequences, and the diverse perspectives of those involved. Moreover, reading World War II fiction encourages critical thinking and empathy as students explore themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the impact of war on individuals and societies. By delving into these narratives, students not only enhance their historical knowledge but also develop important skills in analysis, interpretation, and perspective-taking, making World War II fiction an invaluable addition to any high school curriculum.
This list is by no means exhaustive but it contains newer as well as classic titles, many of which have been made into movies. Share this list with students for reading suggestions over the break or during the school year for book reports or other assignments. Or use for a student book club or even your own book club! World War II historical fiction is quite popular right now!!!
I admit that my own historical fiction novel, Hearts at War, is on the list! I wrote this novel with the high school student in mind, in order to delve deeper into life on the home front for those coming-of-age. The story centers around a Japanese-American boy and a Caucasian girl who grow up in Southern California and then follows how their lives diverge once Pearl Harbor is attacked. Students might be surprised to learn that Japanese-American Nisei served as secret translators in the Pacific theater of war during World War II. I wanted that piece of history to come to light which has been hidden for far too long.
First-Day Lesson Plan for American Literature: Poems about "America"
By Rigorous Resources for High School English
This lesson was designed to be used on the first day of a year-long 11th-grade American Literature course. The lesson includes a poetry packet with 7 poems by diverse American authors. Each of the poems raises important questions about what "America" represents. A land of freedom and equality? A refuge for immigrants? A diverse and inclusive nation? Or a land with entrenched inequality? A saber-rattling evil empire?
Here is a list of the poems:
1. Ada Limón, "A New National Anthem" (2018) — our new Poet Laureate!
2. Emma Lazarus, "The New Colossus" (1883)
3. Walt Whitman, "I Hear America Singing" (1860)
4. Langston Hughes, "I, Too" (1923) — responding directly to Whitman!
5. Claude McKay, "America" (1921)
6. James Lasdun, "The Question" (2012) — is America "good or bad"?
7. Tony Hoagland, "America" (2003)
This resource also comes with a classwork packet that features discussion questions on the poems by Ada Limôn, Emma Lazarus, and Langston Hughes. The discussion questions come on three handouts, each of which contains 7 questions about a particular poem. Each handout also has a quick write where students can answer one of the questions in writing.
How might the concept of "America" represent a set of ideals and promises? Has this nation lived up to its ideals and promises? How might the idea of America be different from the reality?
Thank you for choosing Rigorous Resources!
Happy teaching!

AAC/DEVICE - PROMPT CARD/REMINDER FOR OTHERS.
A practical and effective visual tool to increase independence for AAC users and support them in advocating for themselves and their 'voice' when they don't have access to their device. Our non speaking learners can often experience times where their device/AAC tool is in their bag or out of reach and their teachers/carers haven't thought to retrieve it for them. In instances like this, they may not be able to communicate that they need their device and sadly, miss out on many opportunities to engage, participate and express their needs, thoughts, and ideas.
Having this simple prompt card/reminder provides learners with a way of getting someone's attention and accessing their 'voice'.
Print, laminate, and attach to their desk, wheelchair, wall, visual schedule, or lanyard/keychain- anywhere that is easily accessible for them!
2 options available- 'I need my device please' and 'I need my AAC'. 4 sizes available for each option.

Lent Blackout Poetry: A Literary and Artistic Reflection on the Lenten Season
By Catholic Kids
Students will choose one of the following pages of scripture and create blackout poetry. They will select words to create a phrase that will be featured as their poetry. After creating the poem, they will color the rest of the page, leaving only the key phrases uncovered.
Students can create traditional blackout poetry and use a black marker to cover the rest of the page. They could also choose to draw a picture of the passion or resurrection over the words to convey more meaning.
The pages all contain words from Matthew 26 and 27 which tell about Jesus’ passion and death. There are different fonts available to give the students more choice in their assignment.
When I assign this project, I ask the students to use these sad words to create a positive poem, reflecting the glory of the resurrection, and then draw a resurrection image over the words. This helps the students reflect on the sadness of Jesus’ death, but also to focus on the purpose of His sacrifice and the goodness and grace that came from His death.

Assignment Description
Rubric
34 Pages for Blackout Poetry
This activity is a great introduction or follow-up to my Lent Bundle of games, guided notes, PowerPoint, and a test. I love to use this toward the end of the unit so students can reflect on the deeper meaning of all the content that we’ve been covering.
Objective: Reflect on the words of scripture and create a poem and artwork to communicate some of the meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection.
Choose a page of words from Matthew 26 & 27.
Create a poem by selecting words from throughout the page. Most poems will be about 10-20 words long. The poem does not need to rhyme—it will be free form poetry.
Feature the words of your poem so the reader will read your poem, but not the rest of the words on the page. You can leave your selected words blank, draw a box around each word, or color your poem in one color and color the rest of the page with other colors.
.
Cover the rest of the page with color. You could draw a picture covering the page, or ‘blackout’ all the other words on the page by neatly coloring the entire page with one color.
Additional Ideas for Lent Blackout Poetry:
Benefits of Lent Blackout Poetry:
By expanding on the traditional blackout poetry approach, educators can elevate the impact of Lent blackout poetry, fostering a richer and more engaging learning experience for students.
