Follow on lesson from finding the probability of a single outcome, here is a PowerPoint and worksheet for finding the probability of a complementary event.

Introduction to probability no prep lesson.

Begin with an interactive activity - make a probability line in the middle of your classroom (certain at one end, impossible at the other). Students place an event card where they think it lies along the line.

Worksheet on drawing probability lines and deciding where to add events. Answers are included but many responses are particular to each student.

This data and statistics project is a fun practical, real-life way to analyze and compare data by making use of real-life data, statistics and plots like a box-and-whisker and a scatter plot. This project is tried, tested and refined over many years in my own middle and high school classrooms. It breathes new life into topics that will be stale, boring and old if not done in a real-life way. Students will be able to debate and defend certain viewpoints using the data and their own analysis of it.

This classroom tried and tested data and statistics activity helps students to see the benefit of gathering their own quantitative and qualitative data to make real-life choices. We have all wondered - which water container should I buy? Are the expensive water containers really that much better? Students compare 4 water containers quantitatively for how effectively they keep water warm and cold. They also compare them qualitatively, looking at price, durability, design and other subjective measures.

The Olympic Games have finished, and a perfect time to get your kids interested in how records are met and predicted.

Real-Life Data and Statistics is most interesting for students. In this fun, DIY Task, (with complete key), students study the men's 400M hurdles world record from 1908 tot 2021. They have to

• plot the data on the coordinate plane
• draw a bar graph of the data
• calculate the rate of improvement from one record to the next

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

Do tall students jump high and far? Do the same students jump high and far? Students collect their own quantitative data to answer these and other questions. The data collection does not take long. Afterwards, students calculate the measures of central tendency - mean, median, mode, Q1, Q3, min, max, range and upper and lower outliers (extremes). The handout (with complete answer key for the teacher) contains the formulas students need in order to do all calculations.

This project has been tried, tested and refined in my own middle and high school classes for many years.
