After 76 days, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, the astronauts for the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, made history on July 20, 1969. After the Columbia reached the moon’s orbit, Armstrong and Aldrin went into a smaller module, the Eagle. Did you know that the idea of “sealed with a kiss” comes from Romans who signed every contract with a kiss? Did you know that a good luck symbol to ancient Romans were snakes? Or, that the being pale was a sign of wealth to ancient Romans because it showed you didn't need to work outside(some women actually applied white chalk to their faces to get the look of being pale). South Korea:This would be a great opportunity to introduce students to the county of South Korea. In 2018, South Korea, also hosted the Winter Olympics.There are 11 web questions, lots of Did You Know? facts, comprehension questions and a teacher page with 7 extension activities. There is also a key for both the web quest and comprehension questions and additional links for teachers. Although the activity could be done in one class period, if you decide to do some of the extension activities, this resource could be used over several days. SOUTH KOREA

North Korea: Founded in 1948 by Kim II-Sung, North Korea is officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. About the size of the state of Pennsylvania, it has been nicknamed the Hermit Kingdom because it is a country that few from the outside world have visited. With North Korea being in the news a lot lately, this might be a great opportunity to introduce students to the "Hermit Kingdom". In 2018, President Trump plans to have a meeting with the leader of North Korea. NORTH KOREA

Guam: This resource would be a very good opportunity to introduce students to the Pacific island of Guam, a U.S. Territory.

Russia: The country of Russia has been in the news a lot recently. This would be a great opportunity to introduce students to the country of Russia with this web quest! This is a highly engaging science WebQuest about robins. Students will be able to read, listen to bird calls, and watch short video clips while learning about robins. It is paired with a Make a Bird Nest STEM challenge. Students will need to gather natural materials and build a nest meeting several mathematical criteria: including width, height, and weight. There are three worksheets that can be completed along with specific instructions for the challenge, and an engineering and design process recording sheet. Mummies aren't just found in ancient Egyptian culture. Mummies have been found all over the world! In fact, the oldest man-made mummies are found in the country of Chile! Mummies can be naturally created or man-made. This high-interest activity will get students thinking about the impact of climate change on other people. There is an article explaining that humans have been migrating because of climate-related issues for years. Then they will dig deeper by reading articles and answering questions about the more recent impact climate change has had on human migration. There are links to two articles; one with excellent graphics, questions for students to answer, answer sheets, a link to a video, a mini-poster, and a tip and suggestions sheet for the teacher. 4. A Biologist and marine zoologist, Carson’s books shared her love of nature, especially the ocean and its inhabitants. Her book, Silent Spring, sparked concern in how chemical pesticides were harming our environment. Carson helped to start the environmental movement in our country, which led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. If you are studying the Phoenicians, this webquest will be a positive addition as an introduction/review to the first sea traders of the ancient world. The Phoenicians developed an alphabet which they shared to other cultures in their travels around the Mediterranean Sea. They developed the color purple and were skilled in glassmaking. Their sea traders may have traveled as far as Britain and down the coast of Africa, in a time when there were no navigational tools.

In less than 30 years, the numbers of giraffe have drastically decreased by almost 40 percent. That makes giraffe in more danger of extinction than the elephant. In 2014, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, estimated that there are only about 80,000 giraffes in the wild. In 2019, nations of the world moved to classify giraffes as an endangered species. A committee at the World Wildlife Conference approved the protection with a vote of 106-21. The main cause for their dwindling population is destruction of their habitat, climate change and worsening drought and illegal trade of giraffe body parts. Additionally, civil unrest in the areas where giraffes roam are also causes for their declining numbers. Learn about the giraffe with this web quest!

Part of my Ms. Bie Ografee series of plays, this Reader's Theater Script is on the "Father of the Constitution", James Madison(1751-1836), and his sharing with students the history of the writing of the Constitution. Madison who would become the 4th President of the United States(1809-1817)), played a very important role in the forming of our US Constitution. This high-interest WebQuest will get students thinking about the impact of climate change on other people. There is an article explaining that humans have been migrating because of climate-related issues for years. Then they will dig deeper by reading articles and answering questions about the more recent impact climate change has had on human migration. There are links to two articles; one with excellent graphics, questions for students to answer, answer sheets, a mini-poster, and a tip and suggestions sheet for the teacher.
