Primary/Secondary Sources Drawing: 5th Grade Studies Weekly Week 2
By Colleen Burdette
Students recognize the difference between primary and secondary sources:
This activity will help students practice determining primary and secondary sources. This skill is important across a variety of subjects.
When given a source, students will determine if it is a primary or secondary source. Based on their determination, they will be directed to draw a detail to complete a picture. This allows students to add their own creativity to their work. It also makes it easy for the teacher to determine understanding of the concept presented.
Provided follow up questions increases rigor. These questions can be used for early finishers, as a written assignment, or to lead class discussion.
This activity can be used individually, with a partner, as part of a center, or with a group.
Aligns with 5th grade Studies Weekly Week 2.

Uncovering History: An interactive look into the JFK Assassination
By Nemos Nook
Explore one of America's most intriguing historical events with this JFK Assassination interactive slideshow and writing assignment. Designed for history enthusiasts and curious minds alike, this comprehensive lesson includes an analysis of the facts, theories, and mysteries surrounding President John F. Kennedy's assassination.

This lesson can be done digitally, but I recommend using it as an in class lesson because of the discussions it yields. Students also have questions as we go through the lesson, so I like to be there to answer their questions.

Videos: Watch compelling archival footage that bring the event to life.
Warm-Up Activity: Begin the lesson with an engaging image analysis and writing prompt that set the state for the lesson.
Article: An article about releasing the JFK documents that students have to read and annotate.
After lesson Assignment: using the article and what they learned from the lesson, students will need to answer 2 writing prompts in formal writing assignment.
Rubric: A detailed rubric is included for assessment.

Sunrise/Sunset/Earth’s Axis/Seasons/Shadows/Tilt Scavenger Hunt 5-7
By Mark Holmes
Sunrise/Sunset/Earth’s Axis/Seasons/Shadows/Tilt Scavenger Hunt
Hi fellow teachers
I often do scavenger hunts in grade 4 to 7 classrooms. I find them particularly useful when I’m feeling tired or lacking energy (hey, we’ve all been there).
Why do I like them?
It can look chaotic, but if observed you can see students really trying, really reading the information, and really collaborating and cooperating.
How it works:
There are two components:
My students are currently doing this very activity as I write!
The whole activity takes about 40 minutes and I might suggest watching a couple of Youtube videos on the topic to ‘get them in the mood.
Good luck!

This fun front-loading lesson includes 10 short reading passages and a final mystery word that students must unscramble. Each card reveals a new code word. The correct code words are not only found on a different card but also must be found IN the reading passage.
⚠️ CAUTION: Should you choose to use the activity as a review activity, the questions would be too easy and the completion time would be too quick. Therefore, I highly encourage this activity to introduce a new unit.
How does it work?
Students choose a reading card to start at and may start at ANY card. They read the passage and look at the question at the bottom labeled “code word”. The code word for THAT card number will lead them to a different card. But here’s the catch… students will NOT know where to find the answer so they will have to visit, skim, browse and revisit the clue cards and reading passages several times to find the answer they are seeking. (The more times they read or skim, the greater the chances of the info sinking in!)
Is it still a scavenger hunt?
It sure is! Students are roaming around the room hunting for answers. With large groups it’s often too hard to hide clues without the first group giving away the location once a clue has been found. This format ensures that ALL students can participate, and the “answers” will not be revealed by students who “finish” first.
You can hang the cards on the wall, scatter them on the floor, place them on desks, hide them or use as stations. How you choose to set it up in your classroom is up to you.
Students can work in pairs (or individually) and race to complete 10 questions, secret word and secret code. A friendly competition always increases engagement.
