6th Grade Plan A Party - Project Based Learning - PBL - GCF, LCM, & Box Plots

Do your students ever wonder when they will use their math in their real life? Well this project is for you! Party Planning is a project based math activity with real life scenarios. Students will use their knowledge of the 6th grade math core and prior math concepts to plan their own party. Some of the skills used in this activity are least common multiple, greatest common factor, percentages, unit fractions, multiplication, and more. Check out the preview to see more.

This project is perfect for the end of 6th grade for the students to put into practice what they learned all year in math. Party Planning has an array of different math exercises. It seamlessly integrates the 6th grade math curriculum with real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts while igniting creativity. It could also be a great activity for the beginning of 7th grade math to refresh their memory of the skills they learned and will grow upon that year.

Join the Party Planning committee and:

Use area to choose a venue
Budget for the party food & buy the correct serving sizes based off their party size utilizing multiplication of decimals
Practice unit price and percentages to calculate decorations for the party
Apply their knowledge of greatest common factor and least common multiples to pick party favors for the guests
Use absolute values to read and compare party game scores
Interpret data and create their own box & whisker plots using mean, median, mode, quartiles, and extremes
An optional final project with rubric presenting their party data to the principal

Middle School Math: Taxable Income, Income Tax Game Using Percentages (Easel)

This is a real-life lesson that encourages students to evaluate taxable income based on one's income and the marginal tax bracket. Kids will love this and have a great time discussing the occupations and how much each is taxed. This lesson does not go as far as to discuss personal deductions and standard deductions, which would lower your taxable income. That is for another day. This is a simple introduction to how Federal taxes are collected.

OBJECTIVE

The learner will be able to calculate taxable income based on tax brackets based on percentages.
The learner will understand the purpose of taxation and the difference between state and federal tax.

MATERIALS

Occupation Game Cards (1 set of 24 per group) and
Chart (1 per student)
Game Instructions

PREPARATION

o Set up the classroom desks or tables so that students are sitting in groups of two or three.

INTRODUCTION: (20 minutes)

GAME INSTRUCTIONS

Divide students into groups of two or three. Each group will receive a set of Occupation Game Cards. It is suggested that you laminate the cards, cut them, and place them in zip-lock bags so they can be used every year.

Students will be directed to place all cards face down. Distribute the Marginal Tax Bracket Chart.

Students within the group will take turns turning over an Occupation Game Card. Each will write the occupation, taxable income, and income tax percent using the Marginal Tax Bracket Chart provided on each student’s activity sheet (see below). Students will work together to calculate the income tax and lifetime total.

Alternative: you may have students compete against those within their team as another way to play, rather than having one group compete against the other groups in the class. Whatever works best for your students and classroom environment is the best route to take.

The goal is to reach a lifetime total of 100,000 taxable incomes to win. This will require multiple games, or to make it more challenging, raise the Lifetime taxable income goal to 150,000 or 200,000, which will make the game run longer.

Students can create charts on notebook paper for additional games.

Once they reach the lifetime goal, they win that round. Then have them play again.

guides students through the discovery of equal proportions in the sides of similar triangles.

applies the new found knowledge of ratio and proportion in real-life situations by determining the height of real-life objects.

This task can also be done as an outside activity where students collect the data of Task 6 and 7 for themselves, and then calculating the height of any object at school or in their own back yard. The project has been tried and tested many times and works really well.
