The book, Swim Team by Johnnie Christmas is great for children ages 7 - 13 years old, as they can relate with Bree as she moves to a new state, starts a new middle school, makes friends along the way and the challenges with friendships she struggles to maintain, the lack of self confidence she has, and she becomes more confident along the way, how she solves disagreements with friends, tries her best, shares her talents with others, adjusts to changes that occur in her life, learning that it is okay not to be friends with everyone, the importance of friendship, doing things that you want to do - being a leader instead of a follower, and how to handle stressful situations, anxiety, conflict, and bullying.
The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the packet. Students can also write vocabulary words in sentences. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. Writing Tools for Reluctant Writers Mini-Bundle
By Betsy Newmeyer
Got reluctant writers? This resource bundle will get your students excited for narrative writing and spark all sorts of creative ideas. To begin, practice the concept of Show, Don't Tell with a quick activity that gets kids communicating, collaborating, and thinking critically about using strong details in creative writing stories. It feels like a game, but it isn't!
Then, students work together to build a story from scratch, first selecting a character and a conflict, before selecting cards for sensory details (see, hear, smell, taste, touch), dialogue, and emotions. The word cards act as a word bank, giving kids a starting place to work from. Kids can use the SWBST summarization tools to help plan out their storyline. With the support of peers, students physically plan and orally rehearse their story multiple times before committing the storyline to paper. Kids can switch stories and use their SWBST tools to summarize another team's story, allowing the young authors and readers to compare and contrast how the story may have changed from the planning to the actual writing or publication stage. These three resources are all you need for hours of creative writing fun.
In my own classroom, I used the Show, Don't Tell writing activity to teach the concept of elaboration. Several days later, we used the character, conflict, and sensory detail cards to develop a story of our own. I even used these resources during an observation this year. We took about an hour to plan out our stories and then another hour for the actual writing. The kids had a lot of fun and everyone was engaged.

My own students are absolutely in love with these bookmarks. They found it fun to complete the different bookmarks and couldn’t wait to get their hands on the Visualize bookmark. They literally begged me to do them again. As a teacher, I loved that I could be strategic with who received which bookmark. My students who were still learning English focused on acquiring new words, while my strong readers searched for figurative language. We’ve used them with novels during silent reading time, a short story from our ELA curriculum, and online news articles. I don’t think they realize just how much critical thinking and close reading they are doing. To them, they’re just having fun!

As they read, students use clues from the text (text details) to make predictions and for most of the worksheets, they are asked to confirm whether or not they are correct as well as specify what actually happened. This is an excellent tool to set a "purpose for reading" and keep track of what's happening. These graphic organizers can encourage students to actively engage in reading!
✅ These Graphic Organizers can be used with whole group instruction, small group instruction, and with novel groups/literature circles. These graphic organizers can also be assigned as a "Purpose for Reading" during silent reading time, classwork, or homework! These can also be used as part of a larger lesson!

Students will learn how and why a work’s time and place affects the events and/or the characters of the work. Often the reader/writer will want to consider setting as part of another form of literary analysis (extending the analysis of a character, for example). These graphic organizers vary in difficulty, which provides options for differentiation. The graphic organizers can be mixed and matched for an increase of difficulty.
