  • Put students into groups or breakout rooms of 4-6 students
  • Go over the directions with students:
  • Wait for the impromptu topic to show up on the screen (ex: tell your group 3 different ways to eat an oreo)
  • Decide who in the group will start and that student will have 30 seconds to prepare for their speech after the topic is revealed
  • After 30 seconds the student will present their topic for 30 seconds

Then, they use that knowledge to create an art project of their own, using Picasso’s style, in Microsoft Paint, 3D Paint, or one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included are tutorial links to assist students with the software for the art project.

This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary as well.

  1. A central statement will be announced to the class and you will define the two sides of the debate (Agree/Disagree).
  2. Students move to the side of the room that they intend to defend.
  3. An embedded timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.
  4. Students attempt to keep contributions to less than 30 seconds each.
  5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

Leap Year 2024 | Leap Day Activity | Do We Need Leap Year Socratic Seminar: In this Mini Socratic Seminar and Lesson students will mark the text of an article about Leap Year and why we have them. Then they will have a Socratic Seminar in small groups in order to discuss the essential question, “What is a leap year and is it a necessity?”

By the end of this Socratic Seminar, your students will have a deep understanding of what a Leap Year is and how to mark a text to prepare for a successful Socratic Seminar. Use this AVID Mini Socratic Seminar Lesson to increase dialogue and engagement in your classroom!

  • Lesson Plan with a walkthrough of all the slides and a video overview and explanation.
  • What is a Leap Year Article- google doc which includes a transcript for students to mark their text and come up with questions in the margins for the Seminar. They will also add an essential question at the top, asummary at the bottom, and fill out the embedded vocabulary chart.
  • Google slides- go over the lesson and discuss the process of a Socratic Seminar. The slides include embedded links for students to follow along and access required documents.

  • Students will use their questions and provided sentence stems to have dialogue in the Seminar.
  • Students will complete a participant checklist to reflect on the seminar.
