Famous African American Inventors & Innovators Reading Comprehension Passages

Celebrate Black History Month using this set of 10 of the most influential or Famous African American Innovators and Inventors Reading Comprehension Passages. Passages are designed for students in grade 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Each passage features a short biography of a famous Black inventor, followed by 8 multiple-choice questions that test the students’ understanding of the text.

The passages cover a range of topics, such as science, technology, and medicine. The innovators included in this set are:

  • Garrett Morgan: Inventor of the gas mask and the improved traffic signal

  • Patricia Bath: Inventor of the laserphaco probe for cataract treatment

  • George Washington Carver: Inventor of hundreds of products from peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes
