2nd Grade Literature Guided Reading Books

“These simple Book Request cards solved my problem of students coming to class without a book!”

These helpful cards are essential to providing every student with a silent reading book at all times! Whether you use the AR program or not, you realize that, as a language arts teacher, it is critical that students use their free time to read. There is nothing worse than having a child say, “I don’t have a book.” as an excuse to waste time. Possibly, the school library is not regularly scheduled for students, or they do not have a regular opportunity to visit the public library.

It had been mandatory in my classroom for all students to have a silent reading book at all times. When they would be nearing the end of a book or were unsure what book they wanted to read next, they would fill out a card and leave it on my desk. When I had the opportunity, I would look in my own classroom library and “hand pick” a book for them. students began to enjoy leaving me the book request because the books I would provide for them were completely suitable and of their genre interest. It saved All of us a lot of time! Students in my building had very limited access to the school library, and I truly enjoyed picking out very good literature for each student individually.

Have a pile of these small AR book request card handy for students to use throughout the day.…these cards are a lifesaver.

~ Stink Solar System Superhero is a wonderful book to reinforce a solar system/planet study. Students will use their background knowledge about our solar system and gain new understandings about our planets. This literature unit is a great guided reading group study. ~Questions are based on Bloom’s Taxonomy and use higher level thinking skills. Many questions also elicit story recall responses. ~Included in the unit: -comprehension questions for each chapter -word work activity for each chapter ~ I use this unit with one of my guided reading groups. The unit will last about a week or two. Sometimes the guided reading groups set their own expectations/assignments for completing their books. ~ Stink Solar System Superhero is an AR level 3.4 book.

~ How To Be Cool in the Third Grade literature unit can be used with a guided reading group or as a whole class novel study.

~ Questions use higher level thinking skills.

~Included in the unit:

~ I use this unit with one of my guided reading groups. The unit can last from a week to two weeks depending on how often I meet with the group.

Tornado poke cards are a great independent, partner or guided reading group comprehension activity. My students love the poke card process and enjoy checking each other when they answer questions. The poke cards are self checking. Students will answer the question by selecting one of three choices. Using a pencil, straw, or pipe cleaner, students will poke through the hole to choose their answer. The correct answer will have a mark above or around the hole. The poking process quickly engages the students and provides immediate feedback to them. Cards have chapter titles on them for ease of organization.

Second graders enjoy a good Stink Moody story. Just enough gross stuff for the boys and just enough humor for everyone! Stink books appeal to 3rd and 4th grade students also! Guided reading groups are a great time to work on fluency, word recognition, and phonics skills. Students will love working with the teacher in a close, small group setting. Stink and the Shark Sleepover is book nine in the Stink series. The format is half page (my students LOVE the smaller booklet format). I copy the pages single sided. This allows a blank side for further word work or notes I may want the students to write down.
