Listen & count the coins to $1 Boom Cards digital activity

By TamiaDesigns

A Boom Cards™ activity good for English language learners who need extra practice listening and recognizing numbers, or any students who need practice working on recognizing the value of and counting US coins. Students click on the cash register to hear how much money they "owe". Students need to be able to recognize the number when they hear it, and then count accurately to put the correct number of coins on the counter. The amounts range from 1 cent to $1 (expressed as "one dollar" and not "100 cents”.)

The cards will be presented in a different order every time the game is played. With 99 cards in the deck, 10 are presented each round for a slightly different experience each time. Students can play this deck for a short time every day for a couple of weeks and not see the same cards each time. (Note that if you use "Fast Pin" access to this Boom Cards™ deck, although the cards will be randomized, it will present the students with all 99 cards rather than just 10 of them.)

It is a self-checking activity - they will get immediate feedback as to whether they got the answer right or not. There are 20 different irregular verbs included in each of 3 different puzzles for a total of 60 different verbs. There are no question forms and no negative forms in this activity.

Each puzzle presents students with sentences with a verb in parentheses that they need to write in the simple past form. As students complete the sentences correctly, not only does the picture start to appear, but a ‘smiley’ image appears beside the word to confirm that their answer is correct. Once they have completed all the sentences correctly, in addition to seeing the completed picture, the sentence “You did it, you got them all right!” confirms that they have finished the activity. To teachers, this activity may seem like "just" a worksheet, but most students seem to be motivated by pixel art and the immediate feedback - my students asked for more after they were done with these!

You will get a PDF with links to make your own copies of each of the three puzzles.

Irregular past tense verbs Self-checking grammar activity in Google Sheets

By TamiaDesigns

English language learners of all ages often need extra practice to learn the correct forms of irregular past tense verbs. With 20 different verbs (all irregular past tense verbs) this self-correcting Google Sheets activity gives students the opportunity to practice writing past tense verbs correctly.

Students have to correctly type the missing verb in a sentence. A photo and other sentences using the same verb in different forms prompt the students as to which verb to use. As they enter the answers correctly, a scratch card on the screen is revealed. If a student has a winning scratch card, they win a trip to your prize box (or whatever other prize you choose to offer.) Not all scratch cards will be winners.

Both you and your students will need a Google account for this engaging online activity, but you do not need any prior experience with Google Sheets.

Included in this resource:

  • Teacher & student directions (although NO prior knowledge of Google Sheets is required for either!)
  • One digital Google Sheet activity containing 20 self-checking illustrated questions
  • A printable answer key
  • A list of the base form of 40 irregular verbs with their simple past tense form
  • A list of the base form of 40 irregular verbs with blanks for students to fill in the the irregular simple past tense form.

Ways to use this resource:

  • Add to a “choice board”
  • Use as an ELA center
  • Homework assignment
  • Reinforcement / extension activity
  • Warm up activity

Verbs included in this deck are the same as in the similar activity in my store that asks the students to use these verbs in past tense questions but the photos and sentence prompts are different.

blow - blew break - broke buy - bought cut - cut dig - dug do - did drink - drank eat - ate fly - flew freeze - froze go - went grow - grew pay - paid put - put run - ran sink - sank slide - slid swim - swam take - took wear - wore

Irregular past tense verbs - asking questions Self-checking grammar activity

By TamiaDesigns

English language learners of all ages often make the mistake of using the past tense verb form in the question instead of the base form of the verb (for e.g. "Did you looked for your book?") Regular simple past tense verbs ending sounds Boom Cards activity

By TamiaDesigns

This activity gives students the opportunity to focus on the ending sound of the simple past form of 20 regular verbs. It is particularly useful practice for those students who over generalize and read aloud every -ed ending as -id (or -did!) Students read the sentence and decide what sound the final -ed in the verb makes: -t, -d, or -id. (Multiple choice question.) They then complete the sentence on each card in the past tense by typing the given verb.

Illustrated with photos, rather than clipart, this deck is suitable for adult English language learners as well as students from grade 2 and up as it does not look childish. It is especially good practice for English language learners.

There are 20 cards total with a different verb on each card.

I have an easier version of this activity with audio support that allows the students to hear the word pronounced correctly before they make their final decision about the ending sound and I also have other decks in my store that focus on irregular past tense verbs, that would be a good follow up to this one.

Listen & count the nickels Count coins by 5s to 100 Boomcards math manipulatives

By TamiaDesigns

Students practice their listening skills in this online Boom cards activity. They click on the cash register to hear how much money they "owe", and then put the appropriate number of nickels on the counter next to the register and click submit to check their answer. Students need to be able to first recognize the number when they hear it, and then count by 5s to put the correct number of coins on the counter.

Good for English language learners who need extra practice listening and recognizing numbers 5 through 100, or any students who need practice working on counting by 5s to reach a specific total. The amounts range from 5 cents to 100 cents (expressed as $1) and the cards will be presented in a different order every time the game is played. With 20 cards in the deck, 10 are presented each round for a different experience each time.
