SS.8.A.2.4 Identify the impact of key colonial figures on the economic, political, and social development of the colonies.

This is an anonymous article that was originally published in The Providence Gazette Newspaper in 1775. This article was found in the American Archives

and edited by Peter Force, who collected records from newspapers, state papers, committee papers, and gathered them together in several volumes as

part of forming a documentary history of the American Revolution. However, it is clear that the article is not written by an objective source.

Scholars In Action presents case studies that demonstrate how scholars

interpret different kinds of historical evidence. This newspaper article was published in the Patriot press in 1775 and describes a political demonstration in Providence, Rhode Island, where protesters burned tea and loyalist newspapers. As opposition to British rule grew in the years leading up to the American Revolution, many people in the colonies were forced to take sides. Popular movements such as the "Sons of Liberty" attracted artisans and laborers who sought broad social and political change. Street actions against the British and their economic interests brought ordinary citizens, including women and youth, into the political arena and often spurred greater militancy and radicalism. By 1775, a number of major political protests and clashes with the British had occurred, including the Stamp Act riots, the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party.

Before you move to the next page, read this newspaper article. How does the article describe the event? Can you tell who participated in the protest? Are the political issues and tensions clear? What is puzzling or unclear?

This 12 slide presentation about women in the United States military in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs and posters to convey the experiences on the home front. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding beyond textbook reading. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. This presentation will deepen student understanding about an experience that shaped a nation.

This Reading Assignment and Worksheet gives students an opportunity to learn about the home front during World War II by reading two pages and then completing a one page worksheet. Topics include Japanese-American internment, women and African-Americans in the workforce, women in the military, rationing and other volunteer efforts. This Reading Assignment goes beyond much of what a standard textbook supplies the student and is excellent for close reading. Answer Key is included.

This is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE DBQ Activity: Political Cartoon Analysis Students will analyze and look at different political cartoons from political time to discover how they influenced the colonist in declaring their independence from King George II.

Women and the Industrial Revolution Power Point Lesson

This 12-slide lesson covers women's experiences during the Industrial Revolution between 1865 and 1910 primarily. For women in the cities, changes in society were rapid and significant. Slides review the stratification in society and women's roles within those social classes during this time. Slides include textual information, primary source images and text excerpts and Reflection Questions. These slides can be delivered in-person in a classroom or as a supplemental lesson for students to complete on their own.

This PowerPoint Lesson contains thirteen slides that provide a deeper look at the Victory Gardens planted during World War II in the United States. It also includes an Easel Assessment for students to take. You may use it to teach F2F or provide as an independent supplemental learning resource. The slides contain fascinating and engaging visuals including posters as well as instructions and text from actual pamphlets produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture during the war. Students might be surprised to find out that there were even Victory Gardens in the Japanese-American internment camps. Victory Gardens provided essential fruits and vegetables to American citizens. It was a wholly volunteer effort and involved youth through adults and became a very successful endeavor during a time of great need.
