This 30-slide presentation on the Japanese-American experience in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei). The slides include information about the Japanese and Japanese-American internment in camps along with the enlistment of both young Nisei men and Nisei women in the military. The slides also include information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs, letters, documents and art to convey the experiences of an entire group of people who were moved away from their homes and businesses without constitutional redress. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding. The slides also include Reflection Questions which the instructor can choose to discuss with students. There are no correct answers to the Reflection Questions but should prompt interesting discussions. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. I hope that students find this presentation worthwhile and deepens their understanding about an experience that should give everyone pause but also shows the resiliency of both the Issei and Nisei during a very difficult time.

Reading Assignment and Worksheet with Answer Key

This 7-page Reading Assignment about the Japanese internment and other experiences in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei). This close reading assignment goes beyond typical textbook descriptions of the Japanese-American experience during World War II. It provides detailed explanations as to the evacuation process, life in the camps and issues that the residents faced. The assignment also includes information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The 3-page Worksheet asks students to answer questions based on their reading. This will reinforce their learning on the topic.

This Reading Assignment is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. The second page of this assignment provides a list of important terms as well as an explanation about the use of historical terminology. Analyzing Primary Sources and DBQs

This is a Geography Asia research or wrap-up assignment that can be used throughout the study of Asia (or modified to fit another topic) in geography, world history, and other social studies classes. I have used this in my class for 7 years and it has been a very successful learning tool. This can easily be modified the assignment to fit various topics. Students and parents love this assignment because it is fun and reflects what students have learned. Students are proud of their work when they finish. The idea of the lesson can be changed to fit studies within other core subjects, such as science. This is a supplemental activity that will enhance students learning within the unit study. The teacher-ready supplemental activities included in this lesson are focused on an Asia Unit.

LESSON: CELEBRATING THE CHANGING ROLE OF ASIAN WOMEN

GRADE LEVEL: Mature 7-9th

TIME FRAME: THREE 60-MINUTE CLASS PERIODS

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: GROUP COOPERATION

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will study and examine the ancient roles of women in Asia.

o The learner will study and examine modern day roles of women in Asia.

o The learner will translate the poem Fu Xuan Women.

o The learner will write a letter to a woman in Asia exploring and expressing his/her feelings regarding the roles and status of women within the country.

o The learner will predict the future roles of women in Asia.

MATERIALS:

o Fu Xuan Woman Poem by Arthur Waley.

o Notecards for two-minute assignment

o Questions for thought on Fu Xuan Women

o Copies of the poem Fu Suan Women

o Articles:

o Role of Women in China

o Role of Women in India

o Role of Women in Vietnam

o Role of Women in North & South Korea

o Role of Women in Japan

o Wrap-up reproducible

PREPARATION:

o Laminate four copies each of the reading materials on China, India, North/South Korea, Japan and Vietnam. This may seem like a great deal of work, but it will save you preparation time in the coming years. The room will have been set up in ten centers, placing an article for each center. Since there are only five countries, you will have two centers per country.

o Place a stack of note cards at each table.

o One lunch bag per table.

o Bell to ring to signal to move to the next center

o Place sticky notes at each table.

o Make copies of the Wrap-Up Activity sheets for each country

INTRODUCTION:

Find out what each group knows about women in Asia before you begin this lesson. Divide them into teams of four and present the topic. Give each team a stack of sticky notes. Ask them to brainstorm and list as many ideas or questions as they can come up within five minutes.

Here’s the kicker—(More with purchase)

WARM-UP (GROUP READING ACTIVITY)

The room has been set up into 10 centers: 2 centers for each country being studied. The goal is for each student to visit all five countries, but not to visit all ten centers since some are duplicates. The centers will be timed giving students 10 minutes to complete the reading and

2-minute assignment.

Explain to students that they will be visiting six different countries: Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, Vietnam and India to learn the roles of women (and men) in each country and how they have improved. (Note: North and South Korea have been combined into one learning center.)

They will be given 8 minutes to read their activity and 2 minutes to complete the center activity. Once eight minutes have passed, the instructor will notify the class by ringing a bell or using another sound. The remaining two minutes will be used to complete the 2-minute activity (see below).

THE 2-MINUITE ASSIGNMENTS:

Once the warm-up reading center’s activity is complete, the instructor will pick up the bags and will dump them all into one bag and shake them up.

MATCH MAKER GAME:

Explain to students, matchmaking is a process of making a match of an unmarried man and woman by a matchmaker, which is a common way of choosing a spouse in ancient China and other Asian cultures. The traditional Chinese wedding is much involved with "matchmaker", or in other words, marriage introducer. In Zhou Dynasty several thousand years ago, the post of "official matchmaker" was set up for management of marriage, supervising and urging young people old enough to marry or widows and widowers to marry. Later, the meaning of "matchmaker" extended to all persons or events that act as a go-between of marriage between two families.

Today matchmaking is still seen as the proper way to marry by the older generation. You will find that parents will trade a person’s resume and will compare it to their child’s to determine if it is a good match. However, there has been given more freedom, from one generation to another, of individual choice to choose a partner.

Tell students they are going to play a game called “Matchmaker”.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY

Examine the Fu Xuan Woman Poem by Arthur Waley in how it relates to the role of women in Asia.

Have students work in groups of two to read and examine the poem Fu Xuan Woman. Provide each student with a Question for Thought Activity Sheet (Included). Give students 15 minutes to read and examine the poem, also attempting to answer the Questions for Thought.

Review the answers with the students:

1. What are some key words used to describe women of ancient China?

2. In lines 3-4, to what are boys compared?

3. What do lines 7 & 8 express about how girls are looked upon by families?

4. What does the Fu Xuan’s poem depict about the life and status of women in ancient China?

5. In what ways do the roles of women today differ from the images expressed in this poem?

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (30 Minutes)

Provide each student with wrap-up activity sheet of a female from one of the countries studied. They are to write a letter to the female expressing his/her feelings and thoughts regarding the roles and status of women in that country, as well as celebrating how the roles and status of women within the country has improved. In addition, have each student express how he/she feels women’s roles will change in the future. Allow for follow-up discussion.

Teacher’s Guiding Questions:

1. What was life like for Asian women in the past?

2. What is life like for them today?

3. Do you think much has changed in the roles and statuses of women in Asia?

4. Based on what you know about women in Asia, what do you predict will be the future of these women?

5. What do you think needs to be done to improve the situations of women in Asia?

6. Many of these beliefs we discussed have been passed on from generation to generation as it has been

a cultural issue. Do you think those in the culture are willing to change and allow more rights for women?

7. Who would like to read their letter to the class? (Instructor: you may offer extra points for presentation)

Your students will love this lesson, from 6th grade to 12th grade. The PowerPoint is included in the Zip File.

In 1980, China enforced the One-Child Policy Act to due to overpopulation issues as a result of Mao Zedong's policies, as he competed with Russia for power. Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.

However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.

This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the guidelines of the One-Child Policy Act, Two-Child Policy
  Act, and Three-Child Policy Act
• Examine the cause and effect of China's child policy acts
• Determine the effectiveness of each of China's child policy acts
• Understand Population Density

GROUP READING ACTIVITY: (15-20 MINUTES)
Divide students into groups/teams of three. Give each team member an article to read:

• China's One-Child Policy
• China's Two-Child Policy
• China's Three-Child Policy

DEBATING CHINA’S CHILD POLICIES CLASS ACTIVITY (POWERPOINT)
Students will be given various scenarios via PowerPoint to which they will "Agree" or "Disagree". They will work with their classmates to present reasons for their decision.

This geography and science lesson is intriguing and engaging! The construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the largest hydropower project in the world — that took 18 years to build and over 40,000 workers,—has sparked numerous controversies and debates regarding its impact on the environment.

One of the most intriguing claims is that the immense weight of the dam's reservoir has caused the rotation of the Earth to slow down. Some scientists argue that the shift in mass could potentially affect the Earth's rotation, while other scientists neglect the belief. The Earth's rotation is influenced by a multitude of factors, including natural processes such as earthquakes and the melting of polar ice caps, making it unlikely that the Three Gorges Dam alone could significantly slow down the planet. Students will work together to complete the Doodle Notes that go along with the PowerPoint presentation. Students will hypothesis whether the Three Gorges Dam has slowed the earth.

Note: This lesson supports the idea that the dam has slowed the earth's rotation and provides the scientific backing for it. Please feel free to modify this lesson to support one or the other side.

Get students involved in the learning process through this lesson China's Historical One Child Policy: Creating a Population Density Cartogram. Students will not only learn about the cause and effect of China's One Child Policy of 1979, but will strengthen their knowledge of map creation and reading skills, specific to a cartogram.

Working in collaborative groups, team members will participate in a group reading activity an article on China’s 1979 One-Child Policy Act entitled Too Many In The Family. This article will address the history behind the law, the policy incentives, disobeying the policy, and expectations of the rule. Students to express their thoughts on the topic after the reading and use high-level thinking skills.

In addition, students will have fun collaborating, examining and learning how to read cartograms by creating their own cartogram that reflects the current population of China. This brings the past into the present. Students will need graph paper, colored pencils, a map, and a calculator for this activity.

While this lesson focuses on the original One-Child Policy Act of 1979, there have been additional child policy acts passed since 1979 — the first one being the 2015 Two-Child Policy Act, following the 2021 Three-Child Policy Act. Mao believed number equaled power. Following his death in 1979, China faced an extreme overpopulation issue and started working toward controlling the population growth. In doing so, the government put in place the One Child Policy Act, limiting families to one child. This posed a problem as throughout history, the Asian culture celebrated male babies as they carry on the family name. **Many babies — often firstborn female infants during Mao's reign —**were kept secret, placed on the side of the road to be found, etc. To protect babies from being discarded, baby hatches (often called drop boxes throughout the rest of the world) were put in place where families could safely hand over their babies without placing them in harm's way. These safe havens for babies have existed for centuries. In 2011, China opened what it calls baby hatches — where desperate parents can leave a newborn. A medical team is supposed to pick up the infant within 10 minutes. This lesson is a great study on how government systems can solve their nation's population problems.

OBJECTIVE:

• Students will understand China’s and Korea’s cultural values and beliefs centered on the dynamic of the family and the importance of men in society.
• Students will explore the rationalization and need of baby drop boxes for children’s welfare.
• Students will determine if baby drop boxes solve children’s welfare issues or create more problems for Chinese and Korean societies.

• Set up the classroom desks or tables so students can sit in groups of three or four.
• Poster board for each group
• Copies of T-Chart, one per student. This is what the student will use as notes for this lesson.
• Reproducible of boxes
• Reproducible of balance beam scale, one per group.
• Borrow a balance beam scale from another teacher. Science teachers will usually have these.
• Colored paper
• Scissors
• Glue
• Rulers
• Timer for reading activity

Challenging your students doesn't mean it can't be fun, creative, and group collaboration. This is a Geography Asia research or wrap-up assignment that can be used throughout the study of Asia (or modified to fit another topic) in geography, world history, and other social studies classes. I have used this in my class for 7 years and it has been a very successful learning tool. This can easily be modified the assignment to fit various topics. Students and parents love this assignment because it is fun and reflects what students have learned. Students are proud of their work when they finish. The idea of the lesson can be changed to fit studies within other core subjects, such as science. This is a supplemental activity that will enhance students learning within the unit study. The teacher-ready supplemental activities included in this lesson are focused on an Asia Unit.

Studying **Asian Highway 1 **offers your students a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the cultural, economic, and geopolitical dynamics of the region. This major transportation route **spans over 14 countries **in Asia, connecting diverse cultures and economies along its path.

By studying** Asian Highway 1**, also called the Great Asian Highway, students can deepen their understanding of the relationships between countries in Asia, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise from regional cooperation and integration.
