Elementary School Vocal Music Resources

Felt-boards (or flannel boards) are a fabulous method of sharing music and rhythm with children by using visual props along with songs. My collection of songs and poems will help you to use your felt-board to its fullest potential. This set includes 30 songs and poems that are appropriate for preschool and kindergarten, and are perfect for circle time, group time or music class. I have included lots of old favorites, but some are new and fun songs and fingerplays that will enhance your curriculum.

The set includes more than a hundred adorable graphics which have recently been updated. All you have to do is print out the set and cut out the graphics. (You can laminate the images and attach felt or Velcro to the back if you want to use them on a flannel board or felt board.) Words to each song or poem are included and can be printed and glued onto 3x5 inch index cards.

Need to connect with your kids with their pop music through general music? Involve them in bucket drumming with the 1993 smash hit that is guaranteed to get your kids spooky in The Nightmare Before Christmas' Oogie Boogie Song, re-envisioned in a REMIX!

There are four all-color coded slides along with the form identifiers listed next to each phrase. Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 3 or 4 times). Then, apply it to drums!

All regular notation is to be played on the buckets (or drums, or ground, however you wish), and the X notation (with a down stem) are played as stick clicks above their head (or you could apply it to a tambourine or other auxiliary instrument)

Cup rhythms are terrific for your students of all ages! Inexpensive plastic cups from the dollar store, Target, or others make excellent substitutes for percussion instruments and in unison played together, solidifies steady beat, rhythm acuity, and gets everyone playing as an ensemble!

In this arrangement of Believer, from Imagine Dragons, students will read each corresponding colored section along with the form identifier for the amount of times played.

Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats. Then, apply it your class set of cups (to be done on the ground, in their seat, or however)!

Notation is as follows:

• CUP WITH ARROW - to be played by striking the cup (upside down) on the floor
• CUP WITH HAND - to be played with cup on the floor and patting the top of the cup
• CLAP - hands clap once
• QUARTER REST - one beat rest

Using the song I composed for this book, sing and play along with this wonderful story! Discuss the importance and value of friendship and what makes a good friend, then sing this song after you read the story. Have students listen for the different sections to introduce musical form and then add instruments to play during the changing sections. • For this, your students will each have a basketball (can be regulation size or smaller) and bounce their ball on the ground each time they see a basketball icon. Each basketball icon is denoted as a quarter note. The rests are in between each ball for the students to hold the ball. Any smaller balls (grouped in two) will be played as 2 eighth note pairs and students will have to lower themselves a foot or two to dribble eighth notes on the floor

• There's also a "pat" icon with a hand below the basketball icon itself, so you will have the student hold the basketball in one hand and pat the ball on the beat

Use this wonderful book from Jason Lefebvre to teach and reinforce half notes! Chant this by giving the words "glue", "you" and "do" an extra beat and then ask your students to determine how many beats these words get. Have them move like they're stuck in glue while chanting to internalize the beat. Then use the beat chart and worksheet provided to learn and decode the half note beat. Add rhythm sticks to play the beats as a way to add in instruments. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade.

Teach the ostinato concept using the musical lullaby extension to this well loved book. I wrote a simple lullaby the children can sing at every page turn. As a follow up activity have the students match the animal sounds with the correct animal. Worksheets can be either copied or assigned digitally through the Easel function.
