Creating a study guide for the "order of draw" is crucial for anyone involved in the field of phlebotomy, as it ensures that cross-contamination of additives between different blood collection tubes is prevented. The order of draw refers to the sequence in which blood collection tubes should be filled during venipuncture, and adhering to this order is essential for obtaining accurate laboratory results. Here's a simplified guide to help you study and remember the order:

• Blood Culture Bottle or Yellow-Stoppered Tube: These are used first for microbiological specimens, such as blood cultures, requiring sterile handling. The yellow stopper indicates the presence of an additive that prevents blood clotting and stabilizes microbial growth.
• Light, Blue-Stoppered Tube: This tube contains sodium citrate, an anticoagulant, and is used primarily for coagulation studies. Filling this tube to its proper fill volume is crucial because it maintains the correct blood-to-anticoagulant ratio.
• Red-Stoppered Tube: This tube is often used for serology and chemistry tests. It may or may not contain a clot activator but lacks any anticoagulant properties. It's used for tests that require serum.
• Gold or Tiger Top Tube (SST): The Serum Separator Tube (SST) contains a gel separator and clot activator. After centrifugation, the gel creates a barrier between the serum and blood cells, making it ideal for chemistry tests requiring serum.
• Green-Stoppered Tube: This tube contains heparin (either sodium, lithium, or ammonium) as an anticoagulant. It's used for chemistry tests on plasma or whole blood.
• Lavender or Pink-Stoppered Tube: These tubes contain EDTA as an anticoagulant and are primarily used for hematology tests, such as CBC (complete blood count). The pink-stoppered tube is specifically used for blood bank testing.
• Gray-Stoppered Tube: This tube contains potassium oxalate as an anticoagulant and sodium fluoride as a glycolysis inhibitor, making it ideal for glucose (blood sugar) and alcohol levels testing.

Remembering the order can be facilitated by mnemonic devices or associations, and frequent practice in drawing blood will help reinforce this knowledge. Always ensure to invert tubes gently after drawing to mix the blood with the additives, and never forget the importance of proper identification and handling of specimens to prevent pre-analytical errors.

Inside the Computer: Identifying Parts of the Computer project helps students understand what is inside the computer as well as where peripheral devices plug into the computer. Used in conjunction with learning how to do their own troubleshooting, this is a perfect introduction lesson for a technology class, or any class that is using 1:1 technology.

As an introduction to the lesson, the teacher can show a short video about the computer’s interior parts (included in the resources), or let students examine the parts of an open computer in the classroom. Obtain an old computer that can be touched without concern for damage either from an old computer you may have or ask parents for a donation. In my classes, we use both the video and the hands-on activity since students love taking things apart!

The second part of the introduction involves showing students where things plug into the computer. This is a great start to helping them become more independent computer users by learning how to troubleshoot basic problems with their computers to make sure the peripheral device is plugged in! Again, demonstrating on an actual computer in the classroom is best as the exact locations for plugging in varies by computer.

Finally, have students demonstrate their understanding by completing the two worksheets included. Depending on time and your preference, they can complete labeling the parts inside the computer after the first portion of the introduction and then complete the second part of the worksheet that has them label where things are plugged in after you review that with them. Or, if you prefer, you can do both parts of the introduction and then let them complete both worksheets at the same time. Worksheets are editable and students can complete them on the computer or you can print them and let them complete them if you prefer.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for upper elementary or high school students.

Get ready for your elementary school College and Career Day events with these printable activities. You'll get posters to hang, pennants to decorate, writing activities and note-taking foldables for kids to complete, and bookmarks to pass out.

BEFORE College & Career Day even starts, decorate your school with student-decorated pennants declaring their favorite college or career, and grad caps to declare each student's future plans. You'll also get a variety of cute posters you can hang up to hype up your event, and Goal Setting cards to keep kids focused.

DURING Career Day, kids older students can take notes on each guest speaker with these mix-and-match foldable note taking guides that allow for teachers discrete differentiation for students. You'll even get an editable Google Doc, which can be pushed out to your students through Google Classroom or other platform.

AFTER Career Day (or during lulls in the action), teachers can pass out a bookmark or two while kids complete one or more of the writing activities.
