Covering Japan? I taught a unit of study on the country of Japan for 32 years and would love to share some my notes, activities and resources I used with my students.

Using PRIMARY Sources in the Classroom. A DBQ activity uses primary sources. Sources can include diaries,posters, music, news articles from the time, anything written by those who participated in or witnessed an event in history. Students review the given documents and use many cognitive skills in processing what they see and read. After gathering information using the documents, students develop an essay answering a question.The topic of this Primary Source(DBQ )is Life of a Japanese-American Child Living in an Internment Camp during World War 2.

Did you know that enough dirt was used to create the Great Wall of China to circle the earth with an 8 ft. high wall? Did you know that ice cream was probably first invented by the Chinese(frozen milk/rice)? Did you know that the yo-yo was invented by the Chinese or that the number 9 and the color red are considered good luck in China? Founded in 1948 by Kim II-Sung, North Korea is officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. About the size of the state of Pennsylvania, it has been nicknamed the Hermit Kingdom because it is a country that few from the outside world have visited. With North Korea being in the news a lot lately, this might be a great opportunity to introduce students to the "Hermit Kingdom".

This resource would be a great opportunity to focus on something in the news.

This web quest has 8 web questions, lots of interesting facts(did you know that North Korea has their very own time zone classification or that at one time all teachers had to learn to play the accordion? There are comprehension questions, extension activities and the key.

Additional Resource of Interest:

1. North Korea and South Korea had historic meeting where they announced the end of the Korea War, which never formally "ended" back in the 1950s.. This would be a great opportunity to introduce students to the county of South Korea. There are 11 web questions, lots of Did You Know? facts, comprehension questions and a teacher page with 7 extension activities. There is also a key for both the web quest and comprehension questions and additional links for teachers. Why have your geography students study Asian Highway 1? First, It is the longest highway in the Eastern Hemisphere! **It also acts as on of the main **trading infrastructure **in Asia. Studying **Asian Highway 1 **offers your students a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the cultural, economic, and geopolitical dynamics of the region. This major transportation route **spans over 14 countries **in Asia, connecting diverse cultures and economies along its path.

By studying** Asian Highway 1**, also called the Great Asian Highway, students can deepen their understanding of the relationships between countries in Asia, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise from regional cooperation and integration. Additionally, studying this highway provides students with a real-world case study for analyzing the impact of infrastructure development on economic growth, trade relations, and cross-border connectivity. Ultimately, gaining knowledge about Asian Highway 1 equips students with a comprehensive perspective on the complexities of regional development in Asia and prepares them for careers in international affairs, economics, or transportation planning.

Students will begin the lesson with an optional video, and then move to a song analysis written about the Asian Highway. Students will work cooperatively to complete an interactive reading and dot-to-dot map activity. To wrap up the lesson students will travel the Asian Highway and write postcards from 6 different stops along the highway having learned of the the geography and culture. The class will participate in a most interesting facts group activity, followed up with exit cards. This will allow students to learn from each other.

PowerPoint Presentation
This 30-slide presentation on the Japanese-American experience in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei). The slides include information about the Japanese and Japanese-American internment in camps along with the enlistment of both young Nisei men and Nisei women in the military. The slides also include information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs, letters, documents and art to convey the experiences of an entire group of people who were moved away from their homes and businesses without constitutional redress. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding. The slides also include Reflection Questions which the instructor can choose to discuss with students. There are no correct answers to the Reflection Questions but should prompt interesting discussions. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. I hope that students find this presentation worthwhile and deepens their understanding about an experience that should give everyone pause but also shows the resiliency of both the Issei and Nisei during a very difficult time.

Reading Assignment and Worksheet with Answer Key

This 7-page Reading Assignment about the Japanese internment and other experiences in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei). This close reading assignment goes beyond typical textbook descriptions of the Japanese-American experience during World War II. It provides detailed explanations as to the evacuation process, life in the camps and issues that the residents faced. The assignment also includes information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The 3-page Worksheet asks students to answer questions based on their reading. This will reinforce their learning on the topic.

This Reading Assignment is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. The second page of this assignment provides a list of important terms as well as an explanation about the use of historical terminology. Covering Japan? I taught a unit of study on the country of Japan for 32 years and would love to share some my notes, activities and resources I used with my students.

This resource is for teachers to use to introduce the country/culture of Japan to their students. There is also an activity page with 10 web quest, a map skill activity and some fun facts about Japan.

The reading takes students(grades 4-8) on a trip to Japan to learn about its geography, customs and places to see. The activity involves students working individually or in groups to review vocabulary terms on Japan. Once all the boxes are filled, a "secret message" about Japan is revealed! The teacher page includes additional information to share about the "secret message". Using PRIMARY Sources in the Classroom. A DBQ activity uses primary sources. Sources can include diaries,posters, music, news articles from the time, anything written by those who participated in or witnessed an event in history. Students review the given documents and use many cognitive skills in processing what they see and read. After gathering information using the documents, students develop an essay answering a question.The topic of this Primary Source(DBQ )is Life of a Japanese-American Child Living in an Internment Camp during World War 2.
