Spanish Collaborative Writing & Reading Activities: Teen Life

By Specialty Spanish

Looking for ways to make writing fun for your Spanish students?  If you need differentiated and engaging activities to help students level up their presentational writing and reading comprehension, this is the resource for you!  Students will write together in groups, help each other by doing a peer edit, and later read and answer questions about the characters they have created.

Step 1: Students pretend they are the teacher, and need to leave detailed notes about the students in their class for a substitute.  In groups, students follow the specific instructions to describe each student. Each group will get 4 writing sheets which contain a picture of a student and space to write.  There are 20 different students in all. The instructions ask student to describe each person.  What are they like?  What do they like to do?  What are their future plans?  What’s important to them?  Do you have fast finishers?  No problem- there’s an extension activity for them!  They can help you create questions about what they wrote that will be used in step 3!

Step 2:  After taking a quick glance at their work, set students up in pairs.  I usually do this the next day.  They will trade papers and use the peer edit instruction sheet to suggest ways to improve their writing.

Step 3:  Another day, hang the descriptions around the room.  Create simple questions for students to answer while they read around the room!  *This works great as a quick review for a quiz!  Students love it because they are allowed to be out of their seats!

Differentiation:

-This resource comes with differentiated instructions appropriate for Year 3, or Intermediate Low.

-Students can use new vocabulary along with things they already know how to say to create connected sentences, and attempt to use more than one time frame.

-To level this down, change the instructions to include topics students know how to talk about.

-To level this up, change the instructions to ask for more details and require other times frames.

Who can use this product?

  • Students in Spanish 1 through Spanish 4.  It’s easily modified for any level!

How can I use this product?

  • Students will work collaboratively in part one.
  • Next they work in pairs
  • Finally, they will read and answer questions.  This can be done alone, in pairs or in small groups!

What’s included in this product?

  • Teacher instructions for all parts of the assignment
  • 20 writing pages, each with a unique color image and name of the student
  • Instructions for students to explain their purpose and audience
  • Editable instructions for what to include in their writing
  • Another set of instructions for an honors level class
  • A space for you to add your department rubric look-fors
  • An extension activity for fast finishers (make questions about what you wrote)

The familiar story of Goldilocks is a perfect way to practice and assess your students’ knowledge of the preterite and imperfect tenses in Spanish with easy differentiation. Students love these activities because they use stories that they are already familiar with, making them more comprehensible, turning this tricky grammar topic from dry and boring to engaging and fun!

This resource makes a great emergency sub plan (2 days’ worth of material), homework assignment, or formative assessment. These stories are great for Spanish 2 or as a review of the Preterite vs Imperfect tenses at the beginning of Spanish 3 or 4.

Prepping this resource couldn't be any easier - just print out the pages you want to use with your students and make enough copies! Don't have time to make copies or have a last-minute sub? Use the comprehensible and engaging story powerpoint with your students or assign the Google Slides™ version story and questions.

This resources includes two versions of the same story:

  • Version A has the verbs already conjugated, and the students must choose between the preterite and imperfect tenses of the verb.
  • Version A also includes true/false comprehension questions in the past tense and students must correct the false statements.
  • Version B includes only the infinitive, so they must first decide which tense to use (preterite or imperfect) and then fill in the blank with the correct form of the verb.
  • Version B also includes comprehension questions to be answered in complete sentences in Spanish in the past tense.

Version A of the story with questions is two pages long, while version B is three pages long including questions. The two different versions make differentiation simple!
