My Brother Sam Is Dead Hashtag Summaries and Signpost Analysis - Free!!
By Nemos Nook
This assignment promotes active reading and critical thinking while reading My Brother Sam is Dead or any novel. The students are always creative with their hashtag summaries, and they are able to practice using the "Notice and Note" fiction signposts as they read. Although designed for this specific novel, this could be adapted to any novel that you are using in your classroom.
I usually post this electronically, and the students complete it as we read the novel. they then submit to me electronically for a grade. This is a fun way for students to think critically about themes, plot, and characters in the novel while making their own personal connections.

This product teaches students how to write a letter to a service member who is currently deployed overseas. It describes the importance of writing to our military and gives suggestions for what to say. I use this as an extra credit assignment and hold my students to high standards about the content of their letters. It is incredibly important that genuine thought and effort go into the letters as they are going to real people currently fighting for our country.
If you are in need of a contact to send the letters to, please either message me through TeachShare or email me at language.arts.excellence@gmail.com and I will provide you with the necessary information.

Presidents' Day Reading Log and Certificate Set
By Reading Club Fun
Here is our Presidents' Day-themed Reading Log and Certificate Set!
Our Reading Logs & Certificates are easy to print and ready to use. Once you and your young reader have decided on the amount of reading to be done, use a reading log to record the names of books, or the number of pages the child has read. When your reader has accomplished the goal, fill out this reading certificate and put it in a notebook, on the refrigerator or even in a frame to acknowledge the accomplishment. There are lots of different reading materials for children to choose from. Books are at the top of the list, but other reading materials may encourage reading and add an element of fun. Just for a guideline, some teachers and parents think that reading 200 pages = 1 book. You can adjust your reader's goals according to the level of difficulty of the material he or she is reading.
