Quick Write Daily Journal Prompts: Mindful Coloring Writing Morning Work

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Are you looking for creative, easy-to-use, engaging writing prompts for your students? BONUS... you get to allow students to utilize mindful coloring in their routine! This is for YOU!!

Each creative writing prompt appears on a half sheet of paper as well as on full color and black and white cards. You'll find 100 ENGAGING WRITING PROMPTS in this file (this is VOLUME TWO)! Grab Volume One HERE.

You will also find a quick lesson on mindful coloring which will support your students' social-emotional well-being.

This file includes a link for Google Slides where students can use the text boxes to answer each of the writing prompts. Please refer to the final 7 pages of the product file for this digital option!

NOTE: THIS FILE INCLUDES A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

This product includes a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.

These journal prompts for 4th grade and up include a coloring doodle border which adds a mindfulness component to each quick write prompt. This file includes 100 journal prompts.

Each creative writing prompt appears on a half sheet of paper as well as on full color and black and white cards.

You will also find a quick lesson on mindful coloring.

THIS FILE CONTAINS VOLUME TWO. IF YOU'D LIKE TO PURCHASE THE FIRST VOLUME OR THE BUNDLE, PLEASE SEE THE LINKS BELOW:

  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts for Upper Elem. and Middle School VOLUME ONE
  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts BUNDLE

Please make note of the following:

  • Each prompt allows you to include a mindful coloring component. The border included with these daily quick write journal prompts can be colored before the student answers the prompt (sometimes this gives students time to reflect on what they’d like to write) or after they’ve finished writing.
  • This activity can be used for students as an early finisher activity, a daily journal, for morning meetings, lessons on building community (and empathy), or for mindfulness practice. Please see the instructions for teaching students about mindfulness that are included in this file. If you are interested in additional mindfulness and meditation exercises, click HERE.
  • In addition to the written response pages, I’ve included prompt cards in full color and in black-and-white. These are useful if you choose to discuss the prompts as a class or in small groups. You can also place the cards in a special location and allow students to choose one they’d like to write about on a separate piece of paper.
  • Please remember that some students may not feel comfortable answering or sharing responses. It is important to respect their privacy without pressuring them to share. Either allow them to keep their response(s) private or to choose a different prompt. Forcing the issue will erode their trust in you. Let them know that they are free to share in the future, if they choose.
  • It’s okay to take these cards home to share with your family, your own children, your spouse or significant other, or your friends. In addition to providing individual reflection, they are designed to help people get to know each other beyond the surface, develop empathy, and dive deeper in their relationships. I truly believe that when you REALLY get to know your students, they achieve great things!

Many young teens, and even adults, struggle with maintaining a filter, finding it challenging to prevent their thoughts, feelings, or emotions from influencing their choice of words—especially when upset or feeling wronged. They may impulsively express the first thing that comes to mind, neglecting to consider the potential consequences. This tendency often leads to unnecessary drama and negative energy. It is crucial for students to acquire the skill of controlling their emotions in awkward situations and thinking before they speak. Our words possess the power to either uplift or damage people's self-esteem and confidence. While honesty is fundamental to lasting relationships, expressing true feelings should be approached with respect, care, and appropriateness.

This resource focuses on 12 scenarios related to "Filtering Your Thoughts." Students are tasked with reading each scenario and expressing their initial thoughts in writing. Subsequently, they are encouraged to "filter" these thoughts and communicate them verbally in a manner that is both appropriate and respectful, avoiding any harm to others' feelings. This provides students with chances to practice selecting their words thoughtfully, substituting negative thoughts and expressions with positive energy. It also helps them understand that they can convey their point honestly while maintaining appropriateness and respect.

4 GOOGLE SLIDE VERSIONS are included: One for the graphic organizer worksheet variation, one for the writing prompt variation, one for the blank worksheets variation, and one for the PowerPoint variation.

Not sure what to do, say, or how to help your students when a tragedy occurs? Traumas like natural disasters, acts of violence, or losing a valued community member impact your classroom in so many ways. This packet gives you a handful of activities, tips, and book suggestions to help you navigate tragic events with your students. How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to demonstrate how to appropriately handle or navigate difficult situations associated with anger and self-control. Students can practice and learn the variety of ways they can handle situations that test their ability to control their actions and behaviors. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.

Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.

Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.

Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/ situations. They can evaluate whether or not their approaches to solving problems (despite feelings of anger, frustration, betrayal, etc.) is appropriate or inappropriate and offer other possible solutions and/or suggestions on how to best handle difficult situations and cope with these emotions.

Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like "What can you do to control your emotions, behavior, actions, etc.", "What healthy coping skills can you use to calm down in situations that make you angry?", etc.

Gratitude Activities: Gratitude Journal Writing Prompts and Bulletin Board

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Gratitude Activities Challenge & Journal Writing Prompts Thanksgiving/Christmas BUNDLE:

Research shows that expressing gratitude has a positive effect on mood, peer relationships, and an overall higher quality of life.

Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which also results in a more pleasurable state of mind.

This gratitude activities bundle includes a gratitude challenge bulletin board and a gratitude journal that is perfect for any time of year, but is particularly timely for the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Here are the links for each of the individual products:

  • Gratitude Challenge: Gratitude Activities Bulletin Board
  • Gratitude Journal Activities

GRATITUDE CHALLENGE BULLETIN BOARD DESCRIPTION:

This gratitude challenge is perfect for any time of year, but is particularly timely for Thanksgiving in November and/or any December holiday. It can be used for any grade level.

This file contains bulletin board letters that spell "GRATITUDE CHALLENGE" as well as letter to spell "RIP-N-RECOGNIZE" (these are optional for the bulletin board), 20 RIP-N-RECOGNIZE Gratitude Challenge posters in full color and black and white, teacher tips, a gratitude challenge points page, and letter writing templates.

  • Use these posters on a bulletin board, classroom display, counseling office, or common area in your school.
  • Set a goal for students to reach, but issue a “challenge” for students to go above and beyond the recommended goal. Each challenge (poster) is worth TWO points. Students get one point for writing the letter and an additional point for sending or delivering the letter/note. Some posters DO REQUIRE students to research an address. NOTE: The second point on any given challenge CANNOT be earned until the letter is dropped off at the post office or delivered in person.
  • You will find a challenge sheet for students to keep track of their points. You can structure the challenge in whatever way works best for your class. You can ask students to RIP-N-RECOGNIZE as an early finisher activity, a bell ringer activity, for a gratitude exercise in Social Studies, or as a writing activity during your ELA block.
  • You may choose NOT to use the points as an incentive and instead teach students that expressing gratitude is an inherently rewarding experience all by itself.
  • Each challenge sheet has enough space for 5 challenges. Simply offer copies of the same sheet for students who complete more than 5 letters/notes.
  • It is best for students to rip ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME. Their next challenge can’t be “ripped” until they finish the first challenge they chose. This will eliminate issues with students ripping too many challenges at a time, losing the little ripped notes, and “biting off more than they can chew”.
  • There are 20 challenge options for students. Some challenges might not work for some students. Honor and respect a student’s choice NOT to do challenges that don’t work for their life circumstances. For example, you might have students who don’t know any other family members outside their immediate home, students who are in a foster situation, or students who are homeless. Requiring students to complete ALL the challenges will surely put some students in a vulnerable position and that is not the goal of this activity.

GRATITUDE JOURNAL ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION:

These gratitude activities are perfect for any time of year, but are particularly timely for the holiday season during Thanksgiving or Christmas. You will find two gratitude journals in this file as well as gratitude worksheets and printables.

This file contains:

  • The Gratitude Journal with 24 pages of prompts (can be used as daily gratitude prompts during the holidays)
  • Gratitude from A-to-Z (much like a blank dictionary) for students to fill in
  • a hand full of worksheets or printables to help your students reflect on gratitude in their lives

Research on gratitude shows that keeping a gratitude journal has a positive effect on overall mood. Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which also results in a more pleasurable state of mind.

Perfect for 1st-5th grade, students can use this daily journal and dictionary to reflect on gratitude in their own lives. This gratitude product also includes printable writing activities.

NOTE: THESE FILES INCLUDE A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

These products include a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.

Coping with Tragedy: Activities to Support 3rd-5th Grade Students

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Coping with Tragedy: Activities and Worksheets for Students

Have your students experienced a tragedy?

Not sure what to do, say, or how to help your students when a tragedy occurs? Traumas like natural disasters, acts of violence, or losing a valued member of the community impact your classroom in so many ways. This packet gives you a handful of activities, tips, and book suggestions to help you navigate tragic events with your students. This product was created for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.

If you are looking for a complementary product for Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade, please check here:

  • Coping with Tragedy: Activities to Support Students During Times of Trauma K-2

This product pairs well with these books. Depending on the tragedy you are facing, some books will be better than others. A Flicker of Hope by Julia Cook and A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret M Holmes are beneficial for any tragedy. Some of these titles are specific to certain tragedies.

Check these titles to find what you might need:

  1. A Flicker of Hope by Julia Cook
  2. Worry Says What? by Allison Edwards
  3. A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret M Holmes
  4. Flood by Alvaro F. Villa
  5. The Memory Box: A Book About Grief by Joanna Rowland
  6. Listening to My Body: A guide to helping kids understand the connection between their sensations and feelings by Gabi Garcia.
  7. I Can Handle It (Mindful Mantras) by Laurie Wright
  8. Help Your Dragon Deal With Anxiety by Steve Herman
  9. In My Heart: A Book of Feelings (Growing Hearts) by Jo Witek
  10. Coping Skills for Kids Workbook: Over 75 Coping Strategies to Help Kids Deal with Stress, Anxiety and Anger by Janine Halloran

Take note:

  • Please be aware that this resource is NOT intended to replace mental health services for students in need. Depending on the tragic event, the proximity of the trauma, and other factors, students may need help on a more individual basis.
  • Teachers and counselors should closely monitor students’ reactions to activities. Students respond to situations, activities, and feelings differently. Make decisions in the best interest of students. If some students refrain from participating in an activity. It might also mean that some students require a referral to a school psychologist or counselor.
  • Be very clear with students about your intention to share (or not share) the final product(s) with others. If you intend to display or send any part of this home to parents, students should be aware of that before the activity begins.
  • This activity pack was created for communities experiencing a tragedy. This might include a natural disaster, the loss of a community member (including a teacher or student), or an act of violence (including a school shooting).
  • Though it was not intended to be used for students who experience (or are experiencing) chronic trauma or who have had traumatic experiences in their past, you may find that some of the activities and discussions are beneficial.
