Writing or Grammar Editing Marks

By Fortunate in Fifth Grade

Do you print out your student's writing and have them peer edit? Do you have students' correct sentences when teaching grammar? Then these are perfect for you. These are quick, easy editing marks students can use to correct writing or assist with grammar lessons. I print them out, number the back of them and laminate them.

I hand them out at the beginning of the year to keep in their writing binder. When we do Daily Language they use a red pen to edit the sentences and then rewrite the sentences correctly. When we peer edit I print their writing and they meet with a partner and peer edit each other's work using these correction marks.

This resource includes

  • 6 different colors, 2 to a page editing mark cheat sheets
  • an example of how to use the editing marks (this could also be a handout you can give to the students or post in the classroom).

If you would like to pair them with my Daily Language worksheets you can grab them HERE! These are great morning work activities that continue to build the student's understanding of grammar and editing of their work.

Narrative, Descriptive & Summary Christmas Writing | My Snowman Came to Life

By Nardine Mettry

Get ready to unleash your student's creativity and embark on a writing adventure filled with winter wonder!

Brrr! Winter has arrived, blanketing the world in a layer of sparkling snow. Today is the perfect day to build a snowman! But what if their snowman suddenly came to life?

What's Included?

  1. Drawing Your Snowman: Before they dive into writing, they imagine its unique features: size, shape, facial expressions, accessories (hat, scarf, etc.). Let their artistic side shine!
  • Narrative Writing: The Magical Moment: Tell the story! Describe the scene, their initial reaction, and how the snowman interacts with them. Did they talk to?

  • Descriptive Writing: A Frosty Friend: Taking a closer look at their snowman. A descriptive paragraph detailing its appearance. Focus on specific features like its texture, the sparkle of the snow, or the way its eyes (made of buttons or pebbles) seem to come alive.

  • Summary Writing: A Day of Winter Fun: Let them imagine they spent the entire day with their living snowman! Time to write a summary describing the activities they did together. Did they build a snow fort? Have a snowball fight? Go sledding? The possibilities are endless!

This creative writing activity allows students to:

  • Develop their storytelling skills through narrative writing.
  • Enhance their descriptive writing skills by focusing on details.
  • Practice summarizing events in a clear and concise way.
  • Spark their imagination and explore the concept of a magical snowman encounter.

Don't forget to share with me how it went with your little ones. I hope it was useful in your classroom.
