Students read or watch A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, my students read A Christmas Carol and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas, for an engaging activity before the holiday. A Christmas Carol was a challenge for the students, so watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas was a fun distraction.

This active and engaging resource gets students moving and discussing. Students will make paper snowballs out of the provided cards. They will then use these for a snowball fight. When time is up, students will find a partner, uncrumple the paper, and have a discussion.

Students can reach connections and have discussions with the information they gather.

I use these exact lessons in my classes, and students not only have fun and reinforce what they've read in the book but they are always astonished at how time flies! We have so much fun. It is fast-paced and engaging. It's also great for various types of learners, as many of the questions can be answered using a finger system which prompts shy or quiet students to engage.

Print these fun bookmarks on colored or white cardstock and provide them to your students. The goal is to challenge the students to read and keep up with the number of books they read. Once they have finished a book, they are to color it to reflect they have finished the book.

You may also choose to laminate and them and have them use a permanent marker to cross out the emoji.

► There is a "combo" worksheet, which includes all five questions on two pages. There are also 5 separate worksheets that include the same questions on a different worksheet. This allows for more extensive responses. You can have students either complete all five inference-based questions on the "combo" worksheet all at once OR you can have students complete each of the questions at different times: for classwork, independent practice, homework, or formative assessment - your choice! Then invite students to use those quotations as the basis for building an interpretive argument that is supported by textual evidence. Builds skills in close reading and analytical writing! • Creative Writing Assignment: Invite students to think about the messages they have received about what it means to be a "man" or a "woman." Then, following the example in Kincaid's short story "Girl," have students write a short story about how they have navigated the normative pressures associated with gender. Student writing sample included. (2 pages)

• Short Story Pairings: Read and discuss two short stories that examine how and why young children are socialized into normative gender roles: Kincaid's "Girl" & Bret Anthony Johnston's "Boy." This bundle includes transcriptions of both stories as well as a page of thought-provoking discussion questions on Kincaid's "Girl." (3 pages)

• Poetry Pairing: Wrap things up with the poem that Jamaica Kincaid says "taught me how to write." This poem by Elizabeth Bishop engages with many of the same coming-of-age themes explored in Kincaid's Annie John. The poetry pairing includes discussion questions, answer keys, and a quiz on poetic devices. (10 pages)

This individual or group crossword puzzle activity uses 12 terminologies and optional word bank, as well as word bank with definitions handout, that include: Simile The boy ran as fast as the wind. Sentence uses “like” or “as” to make comparisons. Metaphor The construction worker is a prince. An implied comparison between two unlike beings or objects. Alliteration Casey cackled confidently. The repetition of a single letter at the beginnings of words. Internal (Rhyme) Type of rhyme: The groom was soon doomed. Rhyme occurs inside the words of a sentence.
