Hands-On Grammar Activities for Comma Rules Practice Grades 3-8: Activity Bundle
By Betsy Newmeyer
If you're looking for a fun hands-on and collaborative way to teach sentence structures, comma rules, punctuation rules, and grammar, this is the perfect growing resource bundle for you. Each of the included resources are kinesthetic and collaborative in nature to get students up and out of their seats. Most activities include worksheets and a SCOOT activity. All of the activities are good for whole class grammar practice, small group reteaching, ELD instruction, and independent work.
Topics included in the bundle:
As a fifth grade teacher, I found my students got really excited whenever I pulled one of these activities out. During the class debrief and sharing portion of the activities, I required my students to say the sentence they build out loud, including the punctuation marks. For example: "After school comma I have to go to soccer practice period." This helped reinforce the punctuation rules. The debrief also gave me a chance to clarify any misconceptions and fix mistakes, which helped every student. To extend the activity, we always turned to a book we were reading to find the comma rule or sentence structure "in the wild".

My own 5th graders used this activity to review and prepare for state testing. My 5th graders LOVED this resource. When I first introduced the sentence building activity to the kids, each student was given a noun, verb, and adjective. They went to their seats to build a sentence, then met their peers at the center of the room to read their sentence and exchange one of their word tiles, returning to their seat to build a new sentence. The kids said they enjoyed being creative and that it felt like they were playing with trading cards.
