How Far Is It? - Finding Distance Using The Pythagorean Theorem Grade 8 Lesson

How Far Is It is an 8th grade math lesson that teaching students how to find the distance between two points on a coordinate plane using the Pythagorean Theorem. This lesson can be done with direct instruction, or as a partner/team student exploration.

Students work together to develop a strategy for finding the distance of vertical lines, horizontal lines, and diagonal lines. The lesson starts with line segments on a geo board, then moves to the coordinate plane. Students then try to find the distance without the use of a coordinate plane.

This lesson includes the following materials:

  • Complete lesson directions with suggestion on how to teach it in your classroom.
  • Printable student activity packet (4 pages).
  • Student exit ticket.
  • 1 Extension activity page.
  • Complete worked out solutions.

This lesson will help your students learn how to use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the distance between any two point on a coordinate plane.

2D Shape Family Tree Sort Polygon Quadrilateral Triangle Poster Reference Sheet

Students need to know how to sort 2d shapes and identify the name of each figure. This anchor chart meant to help your kids understand how we classify shapes into categories based on their attributes, a polygon hierarchy made different! I made a polygon family tree that groups polygons into families and subgroups. This helps kids see the relationships more clearly without using arrows.


This resource is well organized and it visually shows the relationships between the multiple different classifications of the polygons, triangles and quadrilaterals. It is a must have to all kinds of learners.

  • Once you have finished teaching, you can use the exercise for practicing the concept taught. This exercise can be used for extra work in class or for homework.
  • Your students can use the QR code on the worksheet to watch the video lesson if they are still struggling with the work while they do their homework. The video is also great for students that need a reminder of the concept when they are studying for a test or exam later in the year!

If you are a homeschool parent
