If you are looking for a rubric for use with a formal character/diary entry writing assignment for a novel or short story, this is a must have!

Clearly written 15 point rubric with 5 criteria for assessing students. The 5 criteria assessed are:

• Included character's background/given circumstances
• Used descriptive language and word choice
• Used textual/historical evidence to improve authenticity of voice/perspective
• Showed evidence of proofreading
• Demonstrated required length/completion of paragraphs: (7-9 sentences each with hook, development of evidence, transition/conclusion)

Looking for a figurative language activity for William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet? This resource invites students to identify various types of figurative language found in Romeo and Juliet. The resource features a glossary with definitions of 7 types of figurative language as well as examples of how they're used in passages from the play. The resource also includes a three-page quiz in which students have to identify the type of figurative language used in each of 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. For teachers, the resource features an answer key that will enable you to grade students' quizzes quickly and efficiently.

Here's what you'll find in this editable 7-page resource:

• Glossary of Figurative Language: The glossary features definitions for the 7 types of figurative language which appear most prominently in Romeo and Juliet: metaphor, simile, paradox, oxymoron, personification, apostrophe, and hyperbole. The glossary also includes examples of how Shakespeare uses each type of figurative language in passages from early scenes in the Romeo and Juliet. I created this rubric to help my middle students know what is expected of them when completing a journal writing prompt for a personal narrative. Often times, my students take advantage of free writing and do not think of it as a "real grade." Five Absolutes of Writing

1.All students will answer open-ended questions with complete sentences.

2.All answers to open-ended questions will follow one of the following response formats:

1-3 Sentences (L1-Daily)

Short Response (L2-Weekly)

Extended Response (L3-Quarterly)

3.All sentences will follow the standard rules of writing with a capital letter at the beginning and correct punctuation at the end of a sentence.

4.All responses must use correct content area spelling.

5.All written responses must be legible.

At the bottom of the rubric, there is a "Scorer" section where the teacher/scorer can provide comments and feedback on students' writing responses. This is an excellent tool for lower level, Special Ed, and ELL students.

These Rubrics can be used for peer evaluation. Students can use these "easy to follow" rubrics to evaluate the work of their peers and provide comments and feedback.

Includes a handout introducing students to the elements in an analytical essay as well as a scaffolded writing schedule with each step in the essay writing process. (4 pages)
