I invented the take on this game several years ago and it has become one of my students' and my favorite days of the whole school year. ⭐Collaborative Writing Activity

"Collaborative Story Time" is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique evocative photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.

How does it work?

• Literary Crossword: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about literary devices. Once complete, they must unscramble shaded boxes to reveal the first code.
• Words of Wisdom: In the second task, students must identify parts of speech in different funny and inspirational quotes from famous figures. When matched correctly, shaded boxes reveal the second code. (Note that in the paper version, task is MLA All Day: In the second task, students must fill in an MLA Works Cited Page with fictional, contemporary sources. Once completed correctly, letters within the sources will reveal the second code.)
• Figuratively Speaking: In the third task, students must identify the figurative language device used in pop songs by current artists like The Chainsmokers, Coldplay, and Ed Sheeran. Shaded letters in the correct answers form the third code.
• A Dream Deferred: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Langston Hughes' "A Dream Deferred." This is perfect for the end of the school year as students reflect upon their dreams for the future. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem will form the fourth code.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a famous and inspirational quote. (We can't give that away here!)

Resource 3:

This user-friendly resource facilitates engaging classroom activities using text message conversations and event posters. Featuring fourteen text message conversations that can be easily printed and displayed around the classroom, students fill in tables and a daily schedule while reading each conversation. This can work as a scavenger hunt activity. After students can plan their own ideal week schedule filled with amazing events. Additionally, students will work with six event posters to craft simple skits, answer questions, and design their own event posters, fostering creativity and language proficiency.

This ESL (English as a second language) resource reviews vocabulary related to common locations, places, or buildings. There are many suggested activities and games to get your students speaking and writing in English.

Resource 5: Scavenger Hunt and Escape Room Task Cards- Location

Included in this Resource:

• Scavenger Hunt: Interactive scavenger hunt activity focused on locations. An activity where students complete sentences by finding the matching answer on another card (e.g., "When I am sick, I go to the ______"). This helps reinforce their understanding of when and why certain locations are visited.
• Escape room task cards: This printable task card activity includes 16 questions about locations. Students race to find the final 4-digit answer! Hang the task cards on the wall, place them on desks, or pass them around. Each answer will be decoded and recorded on a student answer sheet. The task cards are broken down into 4 levels with 4 puzzle types (decoders). Use these task cards for a partner escape room activity, SCOOT, scavenger hunt, or stations. There are countless ways to set it up, allowing students to be out of their seats, moving around, and learning!
• Guess the Location Game: A game where students use four hints (hair, shampoo, scissors, hairstylist) to guess a specific location.
• Mystery Maze Sheet: Students problem solve to find their way out of maze with questions on locations.
• Skit: Students can use the skit outline to build their own conversations in English.
