By Kiwious About Vocab
Introduce your students to the world of Idiomatic Expressions. They will be intrigued to learn of the history behind these strange sayings. Multiple Common Core Standards emphasize the importance of literary devices and figurative language in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Language.
This digital lesson presents 12 idioms with strong historical connections. The idiom is presented with a historical photo supporting the backstory of the saying. A brief historical explanation is provided along with today's interpretation of the expression.
A QUIZLET LINK is included for review or assessment.

FREE Writing Prompt Photos with Audio Soundtrack
By Betsy Newmeyer
This FREE photo writing prompt slideshow is sure to be a hit with even the most reluctant of writers. Each of the 3 photos is carefully selected to ignite the imagination and creativity of the writer, while the accompanying audio and sound effects add a new level of engagement to the experience. The Google Slides presentation requires no prep and can be projected on a screen, interactive TV or smartboard in slideshow (present) mode.
No matter what age, your students will love these 3 creative writing prompts. Simply select a slide to display for your students, turn up the volume as the embedded music starts to play (starts automatically), and then sit back and watch as the creative juices start flowing. Slides can be used to start a conversation, brainstorm ideas for characters, settings, and conflicts, generate a word bank, or inspire an entire week-long writing project.
In my own 5th grade classroom, I like to have my students silently brainstorm ideas before they meet up with partners to build a story. Sometimes we use the photo and accompanying soundtrack as a quick-write while other times we work our way through the entire writing process. Often, I’ll use my interactive TV to record student ideas and capture a word bank directly on the slide before sending the class to their seats to further develop their ideas.
Here's what’s included:
· 3 Google Slide Photo Prompts set to music
· Music starts automatically on every slide
· Teacher’s Guide with lesson ideas
· Terms of Use

Editable Digital Picture Prompts with Buildable Word Banks
By Betsy Newmeyer
Inspire better writing pieces by helping your class build a word bank based on illustrations prior to writing. Designed to be a teacher-led, no prep activity the whole class will enjoy, this Google Slideshow is editable and includes 20 different images with space to write 20 words per image.
In my own classroom, we use images to spark our writing pieces all the time. It gives the kids something to start from instead of trying to come up with their story ideas entirely on their own. And by collaborating as a class on building a word bank, it helps out ELD students and anyone else who struggles to find the right words. As the class generates words, the kids practice oral storytelling, which in turn leads to a better story. Use these photo writing prompts as a quick write or as part of a longer writing piece.

Digital Halloween Photo Writing Prompts with Printable Word Bank Bookmarks
By Betsy Newmeyer
Get ready for Halloween with 5 no-prep, digital Halloween photo writing prompts set to music and printable word bank bookmarks. Great for elementary, middle school, and substitute teachers on the days leading up to or after Halloween. The Google slideshow includes 5 different Halloween-themed images. Each of the 5 slides includes an image, a story title, and a small word bank that can be edited or added to. When displayed in slideshow mode, each slide contains a musical soundtrack that should play automatically. You also get a set of 4 different printable Halloween word bank bookmarks. Use these bookmarks to jumpstart the storytelling process with 20 vivid vocabulary words. These bookmarks can be used in conjunction with the slides or separately.
TO USE
Either select one visual writing prompt to display on your interactive TV or other screen, or push this slideshow out to students via Google Classroom and let each student select which image they want to write about. Be sure to turn your volume up! In my own classroom, I ask students to analyze the image and song silently first before asking them to brainstorm story ideas with a peer. I guide my students to describe what they might see, hear, smell, or touch. Then we add in emotions we might feel, thoughts we'd have, and things we might say. To help support or challenge students, print and cut apart several copies of the word bank bookmarks. Ask students to think critically about what words might make sense in the story they want to tell and to include as many words from their list as possible/feasible. I promise your students will have a ton of fun while still being challenged to tell a great story.
Includes:
Google Slideshow: Each of the 5 slides includes . . .
Image
Song that should play automatically
Story title (editable)
Mini Word Bank with 5 words (editable)
Print & Cut Bookmark Word Banks (1 page of 4 different bookmarks)

Photo Writing Prompts Set to Music: Creative Writing Visual Story Starters Set 1
By Betsy Newmeyer
Inspire reluctant writers with digital visual photo writing prompts with music. You'll get 10 photos prompts, each one set to music, that act as story starters for creative writing projects. You'll also get printable AND editable graphic organizers for both Google Docs and Google Slides, which makes differentiating and supporting reluctant or struggling writers easy. If you're looking for easy, no-prep digitalwriting prompts that will stimulate the senses, this resource is ideal. Can be used throughout the year, year after year.
Use as a Guided Whole Class Lesson. Using this resource is really easy. Simply select a slide to display on your screen, interactive TV, or smartboard for your students in present mode. Then turn up the volume as the embedded music starts to play (starts automatically), and sit back and watch as the creative juices start flowing. The visual and auditory stimuli will help students quickly generate a word bank full of ideas, which is perfect for creative writing. Use the slides to start a conversation, brainstorm ideas for characters, settings, and conflicts, generate a word bank, or inspire an entire week-long writing project. Use as a low-stakes quick write activity or a longer-term writing activity.
Here's what you'll get . . .
Differentiating for student needs is easy. Students can brainstorm ideas via speech to text or typing directly onto a Google Slide or Google Doc. Simply push out the doc or slide out through Google Classroom and be sure to give each student their own digital copy. OR give students the printable document to handwrite their ideas. Use the Prompts and Differentiation Ideas Teacher guide to further support struggling writers by providing kids with a completed word bank, questions to answer, and story ideas.
In my own 5th-grade classroom, I like to have my students silently brainstorm ideas before they meet up with partners to build a story. Sometimes we use the photo and accompanying soundtrack as a quick-write while other times we work our way through the entire writing process. Often, I’ll use my interactive TV to record student ideas and capture a word bank directly on the slide before sending the class to their seats to further develop their ideas. Once, during an observation, the recess bell rang and not a single student noticed because they were so wrapped up in their writing. I'd call that a win!
Teachers love this resource because it's so easy to use and doesn't require any prep time or complicated steps. Students love the music and fun photos that really help set the mood, making writing so much easier.
