Learning Google Sheets - Beginner Lessons start students with no previous knowledge of Google Sheets on a path of learning the most important and frequently used commands to give them a quick start. Each lesson has a short, step-by-step tutorial that includes screenshots to walk students through the new tools they will use in the lesson. Then, they are given a creative task to solve, using those skills to create a spreadsheet. There are five lessons, each taking no more than two class periods.

This lesson has been revised to be compatible with the latest version of Google Sheets (2-2020) and also includes the older instructions and resources that were included with the original lesson for previous purchasers who are re-downloading the lesson. The older lessons are included in their own folder within the .zip file.

This lesson was created for middle school (grades 6-8) but could also be used with upper elementary or high school students.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

This unit focuses on students exploring many of the aspects of creating their own business and introduces some of the day-to-day requirements of that business. Real Estate Career Simulation: Flip a House Project lets middle schoolers see how real estate investors purchase, improve, and resell homes for a profit. Utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel, students “purchase” a home of choice from a list and then determine the improvements they want to make to it, all while staying within their budget. Then, they design the home, using Web 2.0 tools (www.floorplanner.com or www.homestyler.com ) or Sketchup (a free download available at: http://www.sketchup.com/download ). Finally, students use Microsoft Word to prepare a one-page sale flyer for their renovated home. Note: This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2016. It is easily adaptable for different versions.

In this project based learning unit, students learn about hospitality careers as they work together with their team of “Event Planners” to plan a party or wedding. They research costs, utilizing a budget they create in MS Excel (or Google Sheets). Together they determine how they will divide the work of planning the event, creating an invitation and a menu (MS Word or Publisher or Google Docs/Slides). Finally, they research a career of choice and compile their information in MS PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Learning about the Stock Market using Microsoft Excel lets middle schoolers see how an investment can grow and change, as well as the importance of thorough research. Utilizing Microsoft Excel, students “purchase” and track several stocks over a 6 week period. They have the opportunity to sell stocks or hold them, depending on the market research they do. Using a template they create in Microsoft Excel, they will track the increases and declines in their stock investments and see how much they can make their initial investment grow during the 6 weeks.
