Students struggle with learning contractions in English grammar because there is so much to remember: What are contraction words? Where does the apostrophe go? What is an apostrophe? What words come together to make contractions? What is the rule for using contractions?

Once students understand that only the second word of a contraction changes, they are ready to build and break down contractions. After several activities to drill in this concept, students have the opportunity to review what they’ve learned.
