Women during the Industrial Revolution: Primary Source Analysis and DBQs (1865-1920)

This 20 page primary source analysis activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into the experiences and contributions of women during the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age.

There is a total of 16 primary sources for students to analyze along with 18 comprehension questions. Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include excerpts from journals and books as well as images. Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions.

There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. There are two Document-Based Questions (DBQs). An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet.

Depending on how much of the resource is utilized, it can be used for one or multiple class periods.

This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

There is also an Easel Assessment. For Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is a valuable digital tool.

Mythical Beast Assignment: Part of a 10-Assignment Series!

Ignite curiosity with this engaging reading activity on mythical beasts. As one assignment in a 10-part series, it’s designed to develop critical thinking and comprehension in an accessible and exciting way. It is written at a 7th grade level so is accessible to a wide range of students.

Students will read 4 focused paragraphs:

1. Origins – Learn the cultural or historical roots of a mythical creature.
2. Description – Discover its unique features and characteristics.
3. Sightings – Explore accounts and stories that keep the legend alive.
4. Scientific Explanations – Examine real-world theories behind the myth.

After reading, students will answer 4 comprehensive questions, supported by a clear answer key for easy grading and discussion.

This assignment combines engaging content with skill-building, making it perfect for history, science, or language arts.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (+recommendations)

I've included 10 iterations of the same activity (+ a blank set for complete freedom in creating the words. I'd encourage at least 1 of each of the 4 parts of speech - noun, verb, adjective, adverb). Directions on each page go into detail.

Students don't need to use all 10 in one go! Give them all the same one or two each day in a particular week, or longer if necessary. Or give them different ones the same day (one student might get the first 2 sets, another student the next 2, etc.) and it might deter copying.

Print in color so the key/code makes sense.

As our Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL students are completing written assignments, little words/parts of speech that are commonly confused when writing with words such as is and are.
