GEOGRAPHY CONCEPT BASED PLANNING GUIDE BRAINSTORMING BUBBLE (PART 1) FREE
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Free download for phase 1 of planning a concept-based lesson by Lynn Erickson's teaching theory. Download and brainstorm an essential question.
Visit our Blog How To Teach Geography
There is no correct way to teach geography, but there are some best practices. When I began my teaching career in geography 26 years ago in Memphis City Schools, Memphis, TN, the district was focused on concept-based teaching — teaching to the big ideas & conceptual-based learning based upon Lynn Erikson's concept-based instruction. At first, I found it very challenging to implement this strategy into my lessons as it was a new concept and it significantly varied from the way we had all been presenting content to our students. It took persistence; it took patience, but I believe it was a huge part of why my students enjoyed geography and were able to grasp it. An example of this would be teaching the concept of "human population" and then applying this concept to world population ideas and issues throughout the world such as:
Push and pull factors of migration
Cartograms, and population density maps
Causes and outcomes of population growth and decline
China's one-child policies due to overpopulation
Africa's population decline
Europe's population decline, etc.
This conceptual-based learning worked well, and students were learning and grasping the concepts and material. It required me to spend more time on the concept with my students, but it gave them a BIG PICTURE of how variables affect population and how population trends work and are influenced. It made them think at higher levels preparing their pathways for high-level learning and working to strengthen their brain connectivity. It gave them a different viewpoint of looking at geography, rather than focusing on one small concept at a time.
Just to give you an idea of how I would/do begin planning each concept-based lesson, I would begin with a brainstorming bubble, and in the center circle, I would type in an essential question. All an essential question (they always have to use big terminology) is an open-ended question that educators use to spark student interest. I say, let' not make this harder than it has to be.
Here are examples of essential questions specific to geography:
How have Revolutions impacted our world? (This could be taking a look at the meaning behind "revolution" and empowering student understanding of this "concept" through discussing many different types of revolutions such as the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution in the United States and Europe, the Russian Revolution, the Cultural Revolution, the Sudanese Revolution, and the Chinese Revolution of 1949.)
Does music create culture, or vice versa?
Who is an American?
How can learning about other cultures teach us about our own?
What is the relationship between climate and natural resources?
Need an idea for an essential question? There is so much information today on essential questions than there was when I first started teaching. Simply, type into your search engine: "Essential questions for geography." and then align it with your curriculum. Others have "essentially" (no pun intended) done this work for you over the years.

Close Read Analyzing Woodrow Wilson's "Fourteen Points" Speech
By History Guru
Let’s face it, close reading isn’t often a skill that comes naturally. When our students get a new reading assignment, their first instinct is often to race to the finish line rather than engage deeply with a text. Getting students to slow down, engage with the text in different ways, and reflect as they read are challenges for every teacher, and are the goals of close reading. They’re also at the heart of the Common Core English Language Arts standards. There’s no magic way to turn your class into top-notch readers overnight, but there are specific close reading skills you can teach that will help your students now and down the line. This Close Reading includes a Primary Resource excerpt from Woodrow Wilson's "Fourteen Points" Speech, January 8th, 1918. It breaks down the vocab used and gives teacher lead questions, student creation of questions, as well as a summary. We all know that it’s not enough to just understand what a text says. Close readers not only grasp an author’s message, but they also take a look under the hood, so to speak.

✧ Geography Bell Ringers Bundle
✧ Geography Bell Ringers Individually
Every minute counts! As teachers, we are strapped for time. There simply doesn't seem to be enough time to teach all the necessary concepts or find time to prepare adequately for state testing! While you take roll, take up homework, and answer questions regarding late work, etc., have a quick bell warm-up activity for students to complete that will reinforce map, chart, and graph reading along with other higher-level thinking-skill questions. This will prepare your students for state testing! (Questions not included with this template, but can be found in our store).
Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!
This second set of bell ringers ask students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.
Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to the nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. A popular solution to these problems is the idea of the beginning of the class warm-up bellringers. These start-of-class activities benefit both students and teachers.
A bell ringer, often referred to as a warm-up activity or a do-now, is a short exercise or prompt given to students at the beginning of class. These activities are designed to capture students' attention, activate prior knowledge, and set the tone for the rest of the lesson.
Note: Answers are in the presentation notes section within each slide.

ALTERNATIVE USE FOR TEMPLATE
I use questions from a book on everything from map reading from climate to culture to government. It is a great way to give them this practice. I suggest rather than coming up with your questions, get a book with practice questions. I display the question before class begins, and students know what to do as soon as they enter the door. They grab their Geojournal, sit down and complete the 2-3 question warm-up.
I can find questions relevant to what they were studying that week. When creating my lesson plans, it takes 10 minutes to choose the practice questions for the week. Here is the series of geography books that I used: (copy and paste if the link down does not work)
Where to find Daily Geography Practice Books:
✧Evan-Moore Site: https://www.evan-moor.com/social-studies-daily-practice
✧Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Geography-Practice-Grade-6/dp/1557999759
This book is called Daily Geography Practice. It is the best purchase I made for my geography classroom. Evan-Moore has grades 1-6. Even if you teach a higher grade level, these books are useful across grade levels. I purchased the 5th and 7th-grade versions and used them in my 7th-grade geography classroom.
Most classrooms now have projectors or smart boards and these can be used with either. I hope this helps and makes it easier to create bell work! This is the easiest thing I do or plan in the classroom with a great outcome.
Work smarter, not harder!

6th Grade World History Student Learning Goal Chart/ Checklist
By History Guru
World History Student Learning Goal Checklist Many districts require teachers to post the learning goals for each lesson in the classroom. While this may seem like an unnecessary, extra step at first, it is truly beneficial to the students. I created this packet/spreadsheet to make goal posting simple, effective, and consistent. This can be printed out sheet by sheet and placed into their INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOKS, it can be distributed through a Google Sheet, or into a data folder. This is completely up to you. One way- Student directions: It is based on the work we have done thus far, please put an x in the box that best describes your knowledge of the "I can" statement. Before the unit please use a blue highlighter & before the test please revisit and use a pink highlighter. Another way- Instructions: Step By Step 1. Find the unit we are in right now. 2. Based on the work we have done thus far, please put an x in the box that best describes your knowledge of the "I can" statement. 3. Be sure to revisit this before your test to ensure that You've Got This Down! This is what the Civics team is creating your test off of. If you can move yourself to the final column of "Yes, I can." Then you should score 80% or higher on the test. I will be checking on these :) 4. If you get assigned to an intervention. You will need to edit this on the last day of that cycle P.s. This is also AMAZING for teacher & PLC planning.
NEW! Geography — Regions Simplified: Functional Formal Perceptual (PowerPoint)
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Please Note: The instructor/teacher will need to know and understand the concept of REGIONS as this is a concept difficult for young brains to grasp. Even though we simplify it for students, we will need to be ready to verbally or visually explain the concept. Not all students are ready for this high-level concept. This lesson simplifies it as much as possible, but the concept, no matter how simplified, still requires high-level thinking skills and teacher guidance. It takes practice to identify the formal, functional, and perceptual regions. If the instructor/teacher doesn't understand regions, it will be difficult to instruct. This lesson is much better than our textbooks provide.
Help our students understand the complicated concept of "regions."
I often found when I was teaching the 5 Geographical Themes, students grasp location, place, human-environment interaction & movement (ideas, people, goods), but they struggle with regions: formal, functional, and perceptual.
What is the difference between a formal, functional, and perceptual region?
What is a nodal point? How can there be regions that cannot be measured and are specifically based on feelings and perceptions? Can all regions be found on a map? Do they always have a clearly defined boundary?
This PowerPoint provides 7 scenarios in which students are required to decipher whether it is a formal, functional, or perceptual region. You can use it as an introduction or review. You may implement this in different ways.
