High School Informational Text Webquests

Founded in 1948 by Kim II-Sung, North Korea is officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. About the size of the state of Pennsylvania, it has been nicknamed the Hermit Kingdom because it is a country that few from the outside world have visited. With North Korea being in the news a lot lately, this might be a great opportunity to introduce students to the "Hermit Kingdom".

This resource would be a great opportunity to focus on something in the news.

This web quest has 8 web questions, lots of interesting facts(did you know that North Korea has their very own time zone classification or that at one time all teachers had to learn to play the accordion? There are comprehension questions, extension activities and the key.

1. North Korea and South Korea had historic meeting where they announced the end of the Korea War, which never formally "ended" back in the 1950s.. This would be a great opportunity to introduce students to the county of South Korea. What exactly is impeachment? In U.S. History, only three presidents have been impeached. Those presidents were Andrew Johnson,Bill Clinton and Donald Trump(twice). Neither were convicted during a trial and finished out their terms of office.  President, Richard Nixon, was going to be impeached but he resigned, pressured by members of his own Republican party, before he was impeached.  

Use this webquest to introduce students to the issue of impeachment, how the founding fathers determined the use of impeachment in the U.S. Constitution and the history of impeachment.

There are 11 web questions on this topic(including the Order of Succession and the Checks and Balances between the three branches of government). There is also a short Did You Know? section and several comprehension questions. The Teacher Page includes the key and several extension activities.

Using Primary Sources in the Classroom. A DBQ activity uses primary sources. Sources can include diaries,posters, music, news articles from the time, anything written by those who participated in or witnessed an event in history. Students review the given documents and use many cognitive skills in processing what they see and read. After gathering information using the documents, students develop an essay answering a question, in this case, “Describe Life on the Home Front During World War 2”, citing several of the documents reviewed.

A teacher page includes the Key and suggestions for a rubric to grade this Primary Source( DBQ activity).

If a teacher wishes to use the activity as a web quest, suggestions are also given.

Also of Possible Interest:

During WW2, it was very unusual for a woman to be a pilot. When there was a shortage of male pilots due to their being needed in combat, an experimental project was begun where female pilots would be used by the military(although they weren't part of the military) to assist with ferrying aircrafts from the manufacturers to military bases. Female pilots, WomenAir Force Service Pilots,(WASP) also would test repaired planes to see if they were SAFE for male pilots to fly. They also were asked to help train soldiers by towing targets behind their airplane for the soldiers to shoot at(with REAL ammunition). Out of the 1074 WASP, 38 would die(11 in training missions). After the war, these heroic women were basically forgotten. In fact, what they did was classified. They could not call themselves "veterans", nor did they qualify for any military benefits. This wouldn't change until 1977. This play covers what it was like for a female member of the WASP and how their contributions were ignored but eventually honored for all that they did during World War 2.
Great for Women's History Month, study on World War 2 or for a substitute or day before a holiday when you wish to introduce kids to some areas of history in our country.

This Reader's Theater Script using a compilation of women to create Mildred Wallingford, a member of the WASP. Real members are also mentioned throughout the reading.

Learn about Astronaut John Glenn's historic flight to become the first American to Orbit the Earth. Years later, he would also become the oldest American to go on the Space Shuttle! This biographical web quest also contains several questions about the early days of space exploration. There are several extension activities and the key.

What is this event in the USA called an "Inauguration"? Taking the oath of office, a big parade and evening balls, Inauguration Day is a very busy day for the incoming President! There are 12 web questions, a Did You Know? section, comprehension questions and extension activities.

This resource would be a great activity for around Inauguration Day to learn all about the history and festivities surrounding our country's inauguration procedures. It could be used as a Friday activity or when you are studying US Government and for Presidents' Weekend.

Part of my Ms. Bie Ografe series of plays, this Reader's Theater Script is on the "Father of the Constitution", James Madson(1751-1836), and his sharing with students the history of the writing of the Constitution. Madison who would become the 4th President of the United States(1809-1817)), played a very important role in the forming of our US Constitution. Whenever different cultures meet, ideas are exchanged. Did you know that skiing was started by the people of Norway? Did you know that the kite and fireworks were invented by the people of China? The idea of Trial by Jury and the idea of Democracy come to us from the Ancient Greeks.
