State of the Union Address: A History(Webquest)

This resource can be used during a unit of study on the election process and/or can be used during the yearly Presidential State of the Union Address in January. I have also included a worksheet that students could be given to use if they should watch the State of the Union Address.
Learn about the history of the State of the Union Address with this internet activity so you can WOW your friends with all you know about the history of this yearly event! Part of my Ms. Bie Ografee series of plays, this Reader's Theater Script is on the "Father of the Constitution", James Madison(1751-1836), and his sharing with students the history of the writing of the Constitution. Madison who would become the 4th President of the United States(1809-1817)), played a very important role in the forming of our US Constitution. In addition to being a delegate, he introduced the first additions to the Constitution(amendments) which came to be known as the Bill of Rights. After 76 days, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, the astronauts for the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, made history on July 20, 1969. After the Columbia reached the moon’s orbit, Armstrong and Aldrin went into a smaller module, the Eagle. They began a descent onto the surface of the moon and successfully landed on the moon where both men would become the first humans to actually walk on the moon. The date was July 21, 1969! The 'Bill of Rights' Time Travel

This resource will provide students with an engaging way to learn about the 'Bill of Rights'. In a critical reading activity, students will explore and understand the historical background of how each Constitutional Right came to exist. The provided reading is an easy to read, attention-grabbing resource. The second part of this lesson involves having students delve deeper into their analysis by completing a graphic organizer in which students will:
Interpret each amendment.
Summarize the historical background of why/how each amendment came to exist.
Illustrate: Find an image/gif (or draw) that best depicts the meaning behind each of the 10 amendments. Be creative!!
SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES:
Option #1: This activity will have students vacillate between two different time periods: late 1700’s and current day. The slide presentation will guide students through the ‘Bill of Rights' reading AND prompt student discussion and debate as it surrounds the 1st, 2nd, 5th, & 8th amendments.
Option #2: The Bill of Right Rank-O- Meter will have students rank their Constitutional Rights in terms of importance. Working collaboratively, students will present and defend their analysis to their classmates.

The movie is similar to the book series in that it discusses problem solving skills, following rules, working together, and being a good friend.
