This can be used as an introductory before or wrap-up lesson following a World Governments unit. Students often can/will recite the basics of SOME of the Bill of Rights but often do not know how they apply to their personal life. They believe that it was written years ago and does not have any relevant meaning to the HERE and NOW. With this interactive activity, my US History and Government classes dived into the Bill of Rights and learned how to apply each of the Amendments to their personal life. This brought about outstanding debates in class (and online) about civil rights and liberties.

This was created as a PDF document to use in the classroom. There is also a Digital Learning Format where it can be assigned to students to complete in a virtual setting such as Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.

Introduce your students to the complexities of Constitutional Law with this engaging and interactive worksheet! Students will step into the shoes of Supreme Court Justices to analyze a fictional First Amendment case.

This a fun activity when teaching about the First Amendment and/or the Supreme Court. This resource has students analyze a "fake" law that has been challenged all the way to the Supreme Court as violating the First Amendment. Students need to decide, based on the facts given and the language of the First Amendment, whether the law is Constitutional.

They also need to write an "opinion" of the Court and present to the class or submit for a grade. I usually have them do this in groups, but could also be done individually as a short assessment.

This resource will provide students with an engaging way to learn about the 'Bill of Rights'. In a critical reading activity, students will explore and understand the historical background of how each Constitutional Right came to exist. The provided reading is an easy to read, attention-grabbing resource. The second part of this lesson involves having students delve deeper into their analysis by completing a graphic organizer in which students will:

1. Interpret each amendment.

2. Summarize the historical background of why/how each amendment came to exist.

3. Illustrate: Find an image/gif (or draw) that best depicts the meaning behind each of the 10 amendments. Be creative!!

SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES:

Option #1: This activity will have students vacillate between two different time periods: late 1700’s and current day. The slide presentation will guide students through the ‘Bill of Rights' reading AND prompt student discussion and debate as it surrounds the 1st, 2nd, 5th, & 8th amendments.

Option #2: The Bill of Right Rank-O- Meter will have students rank their Constitutional Rights in terms of importance. Working collaboratively, students will present and defend their analysis to their classmates.
