LESSON: CELEBRATING THE CHANGING ROLE OF ASIAN WOMEN

GRADE LEVEL: Mature 7-9th

TIME FRAME: THREE 60-MINUTE CLASS PERIODS

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: GROUP COOPERATION

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will study and examine the ancient roles of women in Asia.

o The learner will study and examine modern day roles of women in Asia.

o The learner will translate the poem Fu Xuan Women.

o The learner will write a letter to a woman in Asia exploring and expressing his/her feelings regarding the roles and status of women within the country.

o The learner will predict the future roles of women in Asia.

MATERIALS:

o Fu Xuan Woman Poem by Arthur Waley.

o Notecards for two-minute assignment

o Questions for thought on Fu Xuan Women

o Copies of the poem Fu Suan Women

o Articles:

o Role of Women in China

o Role of Women in India

o Role of Women in Vietnam

o Role of Women in North & South Korea

o Role of Women in Japan

PREPARATION:

o Laminate four copies each of the reading materials on China, India, North/South Korea, Japan and Vietnam. This may seem like a great deal of work, but it will save you preparation time in the coming years. The room will have been set up in ten centers, placing an article for each center. Since there are only five countries, you will have two centers per country.

o Place a stack of note cards at each table.

o One lunch bag per table.

o Bell to ring to signal to move to the next center

o Place sticky notes at each table.

o Make copies of the Wrap-Up Activity sheets for each country

INTRODUCTION:

Find out what each group knows about women in Asia before you begin this lesson. Divide them into teams of four and present the topic. Give each team a stack of sticky notes. Ask them to brainstorm and list as many ideas or questions as they can come up within five minutes.

WARM-UP (GROUP READING ACTIVITY)

The room has been set up into 10 centers: 2 centers for each country being studied. The goal is for each student to visit all five countries, but not to visit all ten centers since some are duplicates. The centers will be timed giving students 10 minutes to complete the reading and

2-minute assignment.

Explain to students that they will be visiting six different countries: Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, Vietnam and India to learn the roles of women (and men) in each country and how they have improved. (Note: North and South Korea have been combined into one learning center.)

They will be given 8 minutes to read their activity and 2 minutes to complete the center activity. Once eight minutes have passed, the instructor will notify the class by ringing a bell or using another sound. The remaining two minutes will be used to complete the 2-minute activity (see below).

THE 2-MINUITE ASSIGNMENTS:

Once the warm-up reading center’s activity is complete, the instructor will pick up the bags and will dump them all into one bag and shake them up.

MATCH MAKER GAME:

Explain to students, matchmaking is a process of making a match of an unmarried man and woman by a matchmaker, which is a common way of choosing a spouse in ancient China and other Asian cultures. The traditional Chinese wedding is much involved with "matchmaker", or in other words, marriage introducer. In Zhou Dynasty several thousand years ago, the post of "official matchmaker" was set up for management of marriage, supervising and urging young people old enough to marry or widows and widowers to marry. Later, the meaning of "matchmaker" extended to all persons or events that act as a go-between of marriage between two families.

Today matchmaking is still seen as the proper way to marry by the older generation. You will find that parents will trade a person’s resume and will compare it to their child’s to determine if it is a good match. However, there has been given more freedom, from one generation to another, of individual choice to choose a partner.

Tell students they are going to play a game called “Matchmaker”.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY

Examine the Fu Xuan Woman Poem by Arthur Waley in how it relates to the role of women in Asia.

Have students work in groups of two to read and examine the poem Fu Xuan Woman. Provide each student with a Question for Thought Activity Sheet (Included). Give students 15 minutes to read and examine the poem, also attempting to answer the Questions for Thought.

Review the answers with the students:

1. What are some key words used to describe women of ancient China?

2. In lines 3-4, to what are boys compared?

3. What do lines 7 & 8 express about how girls are looked upon by families?

4. What does the Fu Xuan’s poem depict about the life and status of women in ancient China?

5. In what ways do the roles of women today differ from the images expressed in this poem?

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (30 Minutes)

Provide each student with wrap-up activity sheet of a female from one of the countries studied. They are to write a letter to the female expressing his/her feelings and thoughts regarding the roles and status of women in that country, as well as celebrating how the roles and status of women within the country has improved. In addition, have each student express how he/she feels women’s roles will change in the future. Allow for follow-up discussion.

Teacher’s Guiding Questions:

1. What was life like for Asian women in the past?

2. What is life like for them today?

3. Do you think much has changed in the roles and statuses of women in Asia?

4. Based on what you know about women in Asia, what do you predict will be the future of these women?

5. What do you think needs to be done to improve the situations of women in Asia?

6. Many of these beliefs we discussed have been passed on from generation to generation as it has been

a cultural issue. Do you think those in the culture are willing to change and allow more rights for women?

7. Who would like to read their letter to the class? (Instructor: you may offer extra points for presentation)

A culminating activity for students to work in groups to revisit what they learned throughout the year. It is important that our student have fun as they are learning! Implement this group cooperating activity as a means of teaching your students the cultural, geographical, governmental and economics of South America. This scavenger hunt has a twist as it is not only a hunt, but also a game all in one. This lesson can be modified to only be used as a scavenger hunt if needed.

The goal of the game is to earn the most points without answering the same questions twice. Students will take turns rolling die to determine which question they will attempt to answer. They will be given 60 seconds and resources to help in determining the answer if they do not already know it. Students will have a blast! Before you know it, class will be over and they will have gained/reviewed a wealth of knowledge.

A Celebration of Black Geographers & Their Accomplishments!

Geography seeks to study our planet and tell the stories of the people who inhabit it. But what stories are told? And who is chosen to tell them? Throughout history, often Black geographers were not given credit for their explorations and discoveries. This is a great lesson for geography for Black History Month.

1492: Among the crew on the Santa Maria during Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas is Pedro Alonzo Nino, a black man. Africans also accompany Ponce de Leon, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, Hernando de Soto, and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in the early 16th century and it is said they helped with the discoveries.

This lesson brings to light and gives credit to 14 Blacks who were geographical explorers throughout history. Students also have the option to choose to research a past or present geographer outside of those specific to this lesson, which gives them student autonomy and ownership of their learning..

The learner will:

• Gain a greater understanding of Black geographers / explores contributions and role in history.
• Analyze how Black explorers impacted the occupations in geography.
• Gain an understanding of how unnoticed black geographers aided in creating a passageway for following Black generations to appreciate geography.
• Understanding how the Black populations have impacted and continue to impact geography.

Globalization and Interdependence describes the relationships of mutual dependence between all elements and life forms (including humans) within and across cultures, environments, and social systems. Today, more than ever before, globalization and interdependence are part of our everyday local lives. We are linked to others on every continent even if we don't realize it. DAY ONE: COOPERATIVE READING ASSIGNMENT & COMPREHENSION GAME

MATERIALS

• A Geographical Study of Valentine’s Day (Student Copy)
• Store-bought or hand-made Valentine’s cards with envelopes, 6-8 per group, depending on the group size. Each student will have two cards. Three students = 6 cards. Four students = 8 cards. (Students may earn extra credit points for donating cards)
• Reproducible valentines and envelopes if students are not able to provide store-bought Valentine’s cards (Valentine included; purchase some small envelopes at the dollar store.)
• Directions to the Valentine Swap reading comprehension game. There are three options: (1) Valentine Swap, (2) Valentine Pile It Up Game, (3) Valentine's Fact or Fiction Game

Note: For option #3, Fact and Fiction Game, each group will need a whiteboard and a dry-erase marker.

PROCEDURE

Reading Activity & Comprehension Game:

Students will work together to complete a geography Valentine's reading activity on the history of Valentine's Day. They will then participate in one of the three-game options provided in the lesson with detailed instructions.

To incorporate language arts into the geography classroom, the teacher has the option to have the students complete a cumulative group or individual activity of creating a poem. This lesson includes graphics to help students understand the difference between limerick, haiku, and rhymes.

CLOSURE:

Groups/Students will present their poems to the class and will be evaluated based on a rubric.

A fun social studies and geography activity for your students to learn about Christmas traditions and cultures around the world. Appropriate for all ages, from middle school through high school. This can be used in all social studies classes and makes a great holiday & winter break activity. Not only will students have fun with this Christmas geography activity, but they will be learning. Every moment is a teaching moment**.**

Students will work in collaborative groups. Each team will need a whiteboard to write their answers on. Each "Hint" slide includes five hints, one displayed at a time until all hints are presented. Each team will be given 10 seconds to write their answer on answer on the board. When the teacher says, "Jingle bells." All teams show their answers. Each team that guesses the correct answer will receive a token.

Note: A map for each team may be of some help. Have fun! I know your students will. For middle school and high school.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Students will be assigned a team.
• As the hints appear on each slide, teammates will determine what country to which the hints are referring.
• You will write your answer on your whiteboard.
• Once all 5 hints are presented, you will have 10 seconds to write the name of the country on your whiteboard.
• The instructor will say “Jingle Bells,” communicating that you may show your answer.
• Each team that gets the answer correct will receive a token.
• At the end of the trivia game, the team that has the most tokens wins!

OBJECTIVE:
o Students will understand the devastating effect natural disasters have on people and the country economically in the 21st Century.
o Students will be able to identify the cause and effect of various natural disasters throughout history.

MATERIALS:
o Introduction videos to choose from.
o Cards duplication for research on a natural disaster
o Graphic organizer
o Laminated spinner (You may use the one provided or purchase spinners at a teacher’s store.)
o Metal brads, 1 per group
o Laminated game board, 1 per group
o One die per group for the enrichment game.
o Tape—tape down the board game to the desk or table for stabilization.
o Computers, library books, and other resources for research.
o Forces of Nature Thinking Chart for taking notes during presentations.

PREPARATION:
Set up the classroom desks or tables so that students are sitting in groups of three or four.

On the board, write the following in preparation for the game, providing lots of room below each category to place index cards.

5=Results in the most damage costs the most amount of funds for restoration.
1=Results in the least damage costs the least amount of funds for restoration.

INTRODUCTORY VIDEO: CHOOSE THE VIDEO YOU WISH YOUR STUDENTS TO VIEW TO INTRODUCE THEM TO NATURAL DISASTERS:

PROCEDURE:
Students will begin by spinning the wheel on the Forces of Nature game. They will take turns spinning, yet the group will only spin 3-5 times to acquire 3-5 different natural disasters to research (Based on the teacher’s requirements). A list of natural disasters is provided below for which students can refer. Each group will receive 3-5 research cards (included below) which ask them to name the natural disaster they have chosen to (1) research, (2) provide the location, (3) describe the physical damage, (4) explain the cause and effect, and (5) give a total of the estimated cost of damage and restoration costs. Allow students 10-20 minutes to research and complete each card for each natural disaster they chose to research.

Students may need to use problem-solving skills to determine how they are going to get all 3-5 completed within the limited time frame, meaning they may have to divide them up between group members and then come back and share their information.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION:
On the top of the board list the categories below, leaving room for students to place their natural disaster cards underneath the numbering system.

1=Results in the least physical damage costs the least amount of funds for restoration.

Provide students with a Forces of Nature Thinking Chart on which the audience can take notes while their classmates give presentations.

Using their cards, allow students, one team at a time, to present each of their natural disaster cards to the class. Direct them to place their card under one of the four categories of ratings on the board. Be sure to have tape available. Painter’s tape may be best.

Once the class has finished presentations and all cards are categorized on the board, allow the class to discuss what are the 10 Worst Natural Disasters from the presentations, from their lists on the board. This may require that cards be moved around from one category to another in order to determine the 10 Worst Natural Disasters. The discussion will be centered on physical damage & cost of restoration. If students wish to move a natural disaster to another category, they must support their decision with facts. At the end, you should have 10 natural disasters listed under Category 4. This will be what the class as a whole has decided is the most devastating natural disasters throughout history based on restoration costs.
