These word search worksheets will help your lower primary students or beginner ESL students of all ages learn the days of the week and the months.

This resource includes a worksheet with a blank grid for students to create their own word search. All of the days and months are written on the sheet. When they've finished making it they can exchange with another student and solve each solve the puzzle made by their classmate. 3 ready-made word searches are included. You can choose which one to give your students as each one is of a different level of difficulty. I like to print the ready-made search that I want to use on one side of a paper, and print the make your own version on the other side. I have used this resource with 8 year old students as well as 14 years olds.

The basic puzzle is suitable for grades 1 and 2. Words are hidden across and down only.

The intermediate puzzle is suitable for grades 3 and 4. Words are hidden across, down and diagonally.

The advanced puzzle is suitable to grades 5+. Words are hidden across, down, diagonally and backwards.

Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the words on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most. This basic English ESL/EAL resource helps to engage students with conversation starting photographs (Bell ringers or warm up questions). Students will all want to share their opinion while they practice simple English sentences. At the end, students can make their own “I love” and “I hate” folding project booklet or slideshow. This is a great low prep activity for anytime of year including Valentine's day.

Go Fish / 7 Families - This classic card game is fun for students of all ages! Looking for easy prep literacy activities for independent work during differentiated reading instruction? This version of the game is for practicing I AM + ADJECTIVE and is excellent for ESL. Play this game along with my Dots & Boxes activity to provide differentiation, or save money and buy the bundle!

Each of the 7 "families of cards" begins with one of the following, and verbs in the present tense are used in the I - YOU - HE - SHE - WE - THEY forms:

  • I am....
  • I am not....
  • Am I....?

The following adjectives are used in this game: THIRSTY - HUNGRY - AFRAID - HOT - COLD - RIGHT - WRONG

Includes:

42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

How to play

This card game is an excellent way to practice and memorize the verb TO BE and the I AM + ADJECTIVE construction. It will have your students speaking to each other in English the whole time! They will make affirmative and negative statements about what they can and can't do.

One player distributes five cards to each player (2 to 4 per group). The rest of the cards are placed in a stack in the middle. One player begins the game by asking another player to give him a card. He or she might say, "Do you have I AM HUNGRY?"

The goal is to come up with 7 complete families. The different verbs represent the families. There are 6 cards to a family (I - YOU - HE - SHE - WE - THEY). Students will find it helpful to group together the cards that have the same picture at the top (flower, flip-flops, etc.) If the player doesn't have it, he says "Go fish". If he draws the card that he asked for, he can continue to play and ask someone for another card. Each time a player comes up with all six members of a family, he can make a stack. At the end of the game, the player with the most sets of families wins!

Go Fish / 7 Families Game - I CAN STATEMENTS - English

Go Fish / 7 Families - This classic card game is fun for students of all ages! Looking for easy prep literacy activities for independent work during differentiated reading instruction? This version of the game is for practicing I CAN + VERB to say you know how to do something and is an excellent resource for ESL. Play this game along with my beginner level Dots & Boxes or intermediate level Dots & Boxes activities to provide differentiation, or save money and buy the bundle!

Each of the 7 "families of cards" begins with one of the following, and verbs in the present tense are used in the I - YOU - HE - SHE - WE - THEY forms:

  • I can + verb
  • I can't + verb
  • Can I + verb

The following verbs are used in this game: SING - SWIM - DRAW - WRITE - DANCE - READ - RUN

Includes:

42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

How to play

This card game is an excellent way to practice and memorize the verb CAN and the I CAN + VERB construction. It will have your students speaking to each other in English the whole time! They will make affirmative and negative statements about what they can and can't do.

One player distributes five cards to each player (2 to 4 per group). The rest of the cards are placed in a stack in the middle. One player begins the game by asking another player to give him a card. He or she might say, "Do you have I CAN SING?"

The goal is to come up with 7 complete families. The different verbs represent the families. There are 6 cards to a family (I - YOU - HE - SHE - WE - THEY). Students will find it helpful to group together the cards that have the same picture at the top (flower, flip-flops, etc.) If the player doesn't have it, he says "Go fish". If he draws the card that he asked for, he can continue to play and ask someone for another card. Each time a player comes up with all six members of a family, he can make a stack. At the end of the game, the player with the most sets of families wins!
