The Handmaid's Tale Activity Bundle

By Language Arts Excellence

This resource features a bundle of all of our best-selling lesson plans, materials, and activities for Margaret Atwood's chilling dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale. Each product is thoughtfully crafted and allows students to think outside the box by delving deeply into the novel's themes, characters, and plot development. Lessons have all been classroom-tested and allow for differentiation while encouraging optimal student engagement. You will not find tedious lists of comprehension questions and vocabulary words in this bundle; instead you will find materials that will bring the novel to life!

Included in this Bundle:

⭐ Introduction to Dystopia Powerpoint:

This is an engaging, fully editable powerpoint presentation for introducing (or reviewing) Dystopian Fiction to your students! Powerpoint presentation goes through an entire lesson from warm-up to explanation, application, and summarizer. Also included are 2 pages of "guided notes" so that you may differentiate your lecture for all levels of students. Since dystopias are intrinsically motivating for students, this lesson is always a fun one and gets students excited about the upcoming unit on whatever dystopian novel you'll be reading!

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale Anticipation Guide & Lesson Plan:

This product features an anticipation guide for The Handmaid's Tale, and a meticulously-explained lesson plan that is in my opinion, the absolute best way to approach a new novel. Using a non-intimidating method called "Numbered Heads", this activity will get your students thinking, writing, conversing, and reporting about themes you will be encountering during your study of The Handmaid’s Tale.

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale "Silent Conversation" Quote Pass Activity:

Sometimes the best classroom discussions arise when students say nothing at all! This product features a thoughtful and engaging activity for use during your study of The Handmaid's Tale. Centering around 5 different provocative passages from the book, this lesson provides your students with a chance to think, reflect, and respond to their peers without ever saying a word. This creative approach is a great way to differentiate instruction among your students and allows even your most quiet students to shine. I am confident that this no-prep lesson will become a must-do activity within your unit on The Handmaid's Tale!

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale "Hot Seat!":

This product features all the materials you need to conduct a thoughtful and engaging "HOT SEAT" for The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. The hot seat is set up essentially like a talk show, however in order to allow for full class participation, there are multiple interviewers and multiple character guests. Your students will be having so much fun that they will not even realize the high-order thinking skills they are applying.

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale Socratic Seminar Lesson Plan and Materials:

Socratic Seminars (or "Fish Bowl" Conversations as I like to call them with my students) are fantastic, higher order ways of assessing whether your students are able to understand and react to your class text. These seminars rely on the power of inquiry and allow students to take the lead in their learning and discussion. The only problem? They require a great deal of preparation. Fortunately, I have done the work for you! This packet includes everything you need to conduct a structured and formal set of Socratic Seminars in your classroom surrounding the novel, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale Journal Prompts:

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale Social Media Materials:

This resource features two fun, interactive activities to bring The Handmaid's Tale into the 21st century! In this 45 minute lesson plan with accompanying materials, your classroom will transform into a real life "twitter-world" in which students will create twitter accounts for characters in the novel and interact with one another through their twitter pages. The Snap Chat worksheet is perfect for an engaging homework or sub-plan that your students will look forward to working on and sharing with their friends.Your students will thank you for offering such fun ways to connect with Atwood's dystopian tale and will not even realize how much they are learning by digging deep into the text. This product contains 15 Common Core aligned essay prompt_s_ for The Handmaid's Tale. Prompts are all perfect for a 5 paragraph essay, discussion questions, or a short open response for a test (I have used them all three ways).

⭐ The Handmaid's Tale Escape Room:

Get ready to have the most fun you'll have teaching with a lesson that your students will be talking about for years to come with The Handmaid's Tale ESCAPE ROOM! There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock. Each 7.5 x 7.5 (square) PDF poster contains a noteworthy quote from the novel imposed over a stunning photograph that will spruce up your ELA classroom. The square format is reminiscent of Instagram and makes for an eye-catching arrangement on your wall or bulletin board. I suggest laminating the posters and using them not just during your unit on The Handmaid's Tale, but all year long!

⭐ What is Feminism Activity included for FREE with the purchase of this bundle - newly added

The perfect supplement to any unit on women's studies or current events, this product features a thought-provoking lesson to help students articulate what feminism means to them and to see how it varies widely (and often passionately) from person to person. It is a great way to gain insight about your students' current attitudes about what it means to be a feminist in the midst of a higher level thinking activity.

Back to School Four Corners | Mini Debate | Icebreaker | Digital Games 4 Teens

By Perfectly Planned Designs

Looking for fun activities for the first days or week back to school? Well, you found the right place...this classroom game bundle will get your students excited to be in school, create relationships, and get students talking and connected! Great for any time of year or as a back-to-school get-to-know-you activity! Students are always nervous on the first day and playing games like Four Corners is a fun, stress-free way for them to get to know their classmates, while sharing similarities about themselves!

►Use them as engaging class activities throughout the year! It's the perfect icebreaker for middle and high school!

WHAT'S INCLUDED....

1. Four Corners Icebreaker

Use this fun whole class activity to get your students up and out of their seats and making connections! You will find a few typical all about me questions, but the majority of the slides are geared toward the interests of teenagers, leaning into social media, musical artists, food, fashion and more! You definitely won't see overused questions like "what's your favorite color?" or "How many siblings do you have?" You'll see instant engagement as students realize this isn't another boring classroom game.

Simply print the included labels for each corner of your classroom and project one of the questions. Read it aloud, then students should move to the corner that corresponds with their answer choices. You'll quickly see that students will start opening up as they relax and feel confident to defend their choices.

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE:

  • 50 Questions (Google Slides)

  • Includes a Blank Editable Slide

  • 4 Printable Classroom Labels

The presentation includes 50 get-to-know-you questions. For example...

  • Who do you think would win the rap battle?
  • Which music artist do you think has the best live performances?
  • If you could collaborate with any fashion brand, which would it be?
  • What's your favorite way to spend time online?
  • If you could switch lives with any celebrity for a day, who would it be?
  • Which fast food restaurant would you want to eat at for the rest of your life?

HOW TO USE IT:

  • first day of school get-to-know-you activity
  • icebreaker
  • brain breaks
  • morning meeting
  • teach respecting differences

2. Four Corners Mini Debate Activity

Teacher burnout begone!!! You AND your students will love this fun activity! Perfect as icebreakers for those in-between days during back to school when you don't have anything planned. This Four Corners Mini Debate Activity is a great no-prep activity that you can use any time of year for a fun, engaging activity that your students will LOVE!

Students will love moving around the room as you click through the 35 debatable topics - mostly controversial, but some are silly as well! This is perfect for middle school/high school, but teachers are encouraged to preview the statements and skip over any which you feel are too controversial for your student population. (I definitely stayed away from the most controversial topics).

►You will love this well-organized activity that allows students to voice their opinions, defend their positions, and even learn something new!

►The printable Reflection Sheet will allow them to reflect on the ideas presented, and asks them to discuss two issues that they may have changed their stance on after the debate and the reasons why. This is an activity I use in my classroom every year and I know your students will love it!

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE:

  • 35 Statements (Google Slides)

  • Includes a Blank Editable Slide

  • 5 Printable Classroom Signs

  • Student Reflection Sheet

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE:

►If you agree with the statement, move to the side of the room labeled “Agree” or “strongly agree.” If you disagree, move to the side of the room labeled, “Disagree” or “strongly disagree.” If you’re not sure how you feel about the topic yet, move to the side of the room labeled, “Undecided.” (I typically have "undecided" students stand in the middle and hang the other posters in the four corners of the room.)

***Students should be prepared to defend their position even if they’re undecided.
