In 2024, the State of the Union Address is scheduled for March 7th. Introduce students to the speech given by Presidents with this freebie.

Check out this resource to have students learn more about the history of the State of the Union Address. There are 10 web questions, 9 Did You Know? Facts, 6 comprehension questions, a student page(handout to give for homework or extra credit for the night of the State of the Union Address), a teacher page with a couple of extension activities and the key to both the web quest and the comprehension questions. This would be a great opportunity to bring the news into the classroom with the 2018 State of the Union Address scheduled for January 30th.

Process for SS.7.C.3.5 Journal Entry-Comic Strip SS.7.C.3.5 - Amending the United States Constitution Students are prompted to choose one of the following activities to explain how an idea becomes a constitutional amendment. Both the Journal Entry & Comic Strip are both great ways for students to show their knowledge during a legislative unit. This breaks down thier knowledge by applying it in a creative way. Explain the Constitutional amendment process. Overview: Benchmark Clarifications: Students will recognize the methods used to propose and ratify amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Read more! Benchmark Resources Description SS.7.C.2.1 Define the term "citizen," and identify legal means of becoming a United States citizen. SS.7.C.2.2 Evaluate the obligations citizens have to obey laws, pay taxes, defend the nation, and serve on juries. Also Assesses: SS.7.C.2.3—Experience the responsibilities of citizens at the local, state, or federal levels. Also Assesses: SS.7.C.2.14—Conduct a service project to further the public good. This activity breaks down obligations and responsibilities of U.S. Citizens. 1) What is it? 2) Summarize this obligation using a complete sentence 3) How do you know it is an obligation? 4) How does this obligation relate to the common good? 5) What are the consequences if people do not fulfill this obligation? 6) How does this act relate to being an active participant in society, government or political process? 7) What is the impact of this act?

Civic Foundations of the US Government File Interactive Notebook Unit This Interactive Notebook file is filled with hook activities, processing activities, and EOC practice items for ALL four standards listed above. There are 35 pages filled with standard based learning activities for each of the FOUR standard topics listed above. Over the years with being Tech Leader for our school, along with Social Studies Department Head, Coach, Interactive Notebook Leader, and Civics teacher... I have become very talented in taking benchmarks, getting to the root of what is tested on within that benchmark and making lessons. Through the Universal Design Model and AVID, I have created great lessons, activities, DBQs, and practice EOC items that will make your life so much easier this school year. SS.7.C.1.1 Recognize how Enlightenment ideas including Montesquieu's view of separation of power and John Locke's theories related to natural law and how Locke's social contract influenced the Founding Fathers. SS.7.C.1.2 Trace the impact that the Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights, Mayflower Compact, and Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" had on colonists' views of government. SS.7.C.1.3 Describe how English policies and responses to colonial concerns led to the writing of the Declaration of Independence. SS.7.C.1.4 Analyze the ideas (natural rights, role of the government) and complaints set forth in the Declaration of Independence.

The purpose of this interactive notebook is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. This forms & types of government interactive notebook has class notes as well as for other activities where the student will be asked to express his/her own ideas and process the information presented in class. This guided gradual release model walks students not only through the forms & types, but the Systems of Government as well. You literally don't have to make a single lesson for these two combined units. Requirements vary from teacher to teacher and has been set up according to the directions of the teacher (already been given, but can be altered in this 16 page long Microsoft Word document that you can alter if you would like. Pick and choose pages if you would like as well! It's all already done for you! The only think left for you to do is assess the students after they assess themselves in the learning goal chart found on page 16 that has the students motitor their own learning! Wow, amazing... I know. But the best part is the EOC Practice items to check their understanding as they go. PHEW! That's a lot of stuff for 16 pages... a lot of stuff that you now don't have to do if you purchase this awesome item.

Right to Petition Scenario: Rafi is upset over the current curfew affecting teenagers throughout Glendale. Rafi decided that he was going to collect as many signatures as he could on a petition and present it to the city government’s office. Directions: Using your knowledge from the lesson, write a newspaper article illustrating the situation from above. Finish the story with what may have happened to the petition.
