With this interactive scavenger hunt students will learn fun and interesting Hanukkah related facts like: Did you know Hanukkah is also known as the festival of lights? Or Did you know there is 16 different ways to spell Hanukkah? The scavenger hunt includes 18 fact cards and asks students to read the cards closely for information to fill in the answer sheets. Fact cards are numbered and provide all the information needed for students.

This scavenger hunt will still work broken into shorter segments for multiple lessons or a shorter activity.

This scavenger hunt also works well as a scoot game!

Directions:

1. A central statement will be announced to the class and you will define the two sides of the debate (Agree/Disagree).
2. Students move to the side of the room that they intend to defend.
3. An embedded timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.
4. Students attempt to keep contributions to less than 30 seconds each.
5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

There are 2 Nonfiction texts (“The Legend of Saint-Valentine” and  “Love Locks- The Cities do not love them”) with comprehension questions (answer key included). Students may also watch the short film  « La boîte ». There are questions for class discussion or for students to respond independently in writing. Finally, students may also become music critics as they listen to a selection of songs curated for February. A template is included to help students share their opinion on the songs.

Resource 6: Valentine's day activities

Resource 8:

This St. Patrick’s day basic FSL French resource is filled with printable no prep activities and writing prompts for March. This resource includes a visual tour of Ireland and an overview of the traditions of la Saint-Patrick. The slideshow shares basic information on Irish traditions including St. Patrick’s Day. Take a visual tour of Irish landmarks as you also learn about traditional music and dance.

Simplify your December planning with this ESL resource designed to immerse your students in the holiday spirit with low prep holiday printables to practice basic vocabulary.

Resource 1- The Puzzle Street Gift Box Mix-Up

This English Second Language ESL ELL EAL resource helps to practice reading basic personal information. This low prep resource adds problem solving and movement into a second language classroom. Cards share information on each family (i.e. family members, favorite pastime, pet's name ...). Each card gives a question, but the answer is found on an unknown card. The scavenger hunt begins!

**Please read the sample card in the pictures to check for language level.**

Explanation:

The "Puzzle Street Gift Box Mix-Up" involves students in a scavenger hunt where they explore 10 centers, decipher clues, and unravel the mystery of a delivery mishap. Each card contains personal information about a family on Puzzle Street and poses a question. The catch? The answer lies on another card. Students embark on a scavenger hunt, moving from one station to another to gather clues about each family and solve the puzzle. Place cards on the walls or scatter on tables around the room. Students must visit and read each card in order to answer the questions.

A fun social studies and geography activity for your students to learn about Christmas traditions and cultures around the world. Appropriate for all ages, from middle school through high school. This can be used in all social studies classes and makes a great holiday & winter break activity. Not only will students have fun with this Christmas geography activity, but they will be learning. Every moment is a teaching moment**.**

Students will work in collaborative groups. Each team will need a whiteboard to write their answers on. Each "Hint" slide includes five hints, one displayed at a time until all hints are presented. Each team will be given 10 seconds to write their answer on answer on the board. When the teacher says, "Jingle bells." All teams show their answers. Each team that guesses the correct answer will receive a token.

Note: A map for each team may be of some help. Have fun! I know your students will. For middle school and high school.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Students will be assigned a team.
• As the hints appear on each slide, teammates will determine what country to which the hints are referring.
• You will write your answer on your whiteboard.
• Once all 5 hints are presented, you will have 10 seconds to write the name of the country on your whiteboard.
• The instructor will say “Jingle Bells,” communicating that you may show your answer.
• Each team that gets the answer correct will receive a token.
• At the end of the trivia game, the team that has the most tokens wins!

This is a fun seasonal Christmas and Winter Holiday geography activity that students will find engaging and fun!

This is a great lesson for the week before Winter/Holiday Break. Students will take a Christmas journey around the world! If you need an activity for 1-2 days, this lesson is easy to modify to the time limitations you may have. This lesson takes students on a journey using Journey Cards to cities and towns around the world that have Christmas names. Students will work in teams and will use Google Earth Online to explore each location on the Journey Cards as well as practice plotting the absolute location of each location. Students will look at the location, the physical characteristics, and fun facts. Every moment is a teaching moment, even those days before the holiday break.

OBJECTIVES:

(1) The learner will plot the coordinates of towns with Christmas names on a coordinate plot map using latitude and longitude (Absolute Location).

(2) The learner will explore cities and towns around the world with Christmas and winter-themed names using Google Earth.
(3) The learner will identify the continent, hemisphere, physical features, and interesting physical or cultural facts related to each city or town.
(3) The learner will evaluate and compare the towns and cities' location, environment, and living conditions to determine where they would most and less likely live.

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. All tasks are Language Arts skills-based so that with this fun lesson near a sugar-filled holiday, learning is not sacrificed. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

The ghost of O. Henry has returned from the grave and is upset because he believes that people nowadays care too much about getting expensive gifts at Christmas and no longer understand the true importance and wisdom of the magi. He has decided to destroy Christmas forever, unless your students can show their knowledge of the short story and in turn, recall the lessons that Jim and Della learned themselves not so long ago.

• Magi Trivia: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, figurative language, and quotes from the story. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal the code.
• Merry Vocabulary: In the second task, students must match the vocabulary words from The Gift of the Magi with their definitions by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their second code word. Clue cards using the words in context are included.
• Word Maze: In the third task, students must complete a word maze. Letters collected along the way form the third code.
• Off the Chart: In the fourth task, students must fill in a chart containing literary elements and questions about the short story. Shaded boxes next to the correct answers reveal the fourth code.
• Missing Word: In the final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that forms a notable quote from the story with one missing word. Once the puzzle is assembled and students figure out the missing word, they may escape the room and save Christmas.

The lesson involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. All tasks are Language Arts skills-based so that with this engaging lesson, learning is not sacrificed; in fact, students will come away with it with a greater understanding about the history an importance of Hanukkah.

How does it work?

Your students will work to complete 5 Language Arts-based tasks about Hanukkah in order to learn more about this important and beloved holiday.

• Origin Story: In the first task, students must correct incorrectly used homophones within the origin story of Hanukkah.

• Quote Worthy: In the second task, students must identify parts of speech within 7 quotes about Hanukkah.

• Figuratively Traditional: In the third task, students must identify figurative language woven into passages describing popular Hanukkah traditions.

• The Miracle: In the fourth task, students must answer multiple choice questions about the poem, The Miracle by Philip M. Raskin.

• Criss-Cross: In the fifth and final task, all students have learned throughout the stations activity will come together as they must fill out a crossword puzzle about Hanukkah. Once they have completed the puzzle and cracked the final code, they are done.
