Why teach word meaning through nonsense words (context clues only)?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve

You came to the right place! I have been teaching for 5+ years, I have my Master's in Education with a focus on Literacy and I didn't know where to start.

I gathered key word lists when I didn't have a word from our daily reading, and thought about how to teach vocabulary so my love of etymology and words could be shared with my 10th graders. DBQ Activity: Image Analysis

Propaganda Poster from 1917.

Students will walk through a one page guided Document Based Questioning activity over the use of propaganda using a primary source.

Determining the feelings and emotions of moments in history through comics and propaganda is a great way to explain events to students. This close read is going over exactly that for the Temperance Movement. This will break down vocab, references, and context clues. This could easily be a simple DBQ or an in-depth close read opportunity for either a US History class or a Reading/ ELA course.

SS.7.C.2.1 & SS.7.C.2.2 Civics Citizenship The students will complete the bellwork in a 5 day model. Each day is a scaffolded release of questions targeted at 5 main language arts standards. This allows students to pick apart the important information while meeting their language arts requirements in social studies.
