Why teach word meaning through nonsense words (context clues only)?
All of these are things we want every student to do! This is something that is already adapted for high and low learners.
Starting with three nonsense words gets students going so they can work in groups or independently to decode the meaning of 7 REAL words (selected from the SAT vocabulary list).
This is a perfect activity for group problem solving and critical thinking!
Finding the meaning of words: in context, with a definition and from the Latin or Greek base. Four teaching pages are included for self-guided learning along with 7 student pages for practice with various shortened reading passages.

NEED TO TEACH VOCABULARY IN YOUR MIDDLE OR HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM AND YOU'RE NOT SURE WHERE TO START?
You came to the right place! I have been teaching for 5+ years, I have my Master's in Education with a focus on Literacy and I didn't know where to start.
So, I went back to everything I learned in my graduate program and re-read everything I could find.
I wrote & designed a student-engaging template to help students in my classroom to deeply internalize a word. I gathered key word lists when I didn't have a word from our daily reading, and thought about how to teach vocabulary so my love of etymology and words could be shared with my 10th graders. I've included all that and a guide to help other teachers get started with implementing and teaching vocabulary in THEIR classrooms.
Is this book for me?
Then this book is for you!
Adaptable to every classroom in every situation, this is more than a fill-in-the-blank activity. Your students will have a guide to build a vocabulary for a lifetime of learning.
WHY TEACH VOCABULARY EXPLICITLY?
Generating curiosity and delight in playing with words supports long-term memory, enhances the connection between orthography and meaning, and develops a disposition which stimulates word consciousness. It also builds vocabulary! All of these are a part of a vocabulary rich classroom environment.

Understanding idioms in English (set 2) Boom Cards digital activity
By TamiaDesigns
Idioms can be tricky for English language learners or students with language learning difficulties to understand and they often need to be specifically introduced to them. This online, self-checking, activity hosted at Boom Learning℠, shows students 10 different idioms on 20 different cards, so they see each idiom twice.
The first 10 illustrated cards ask student to identify the literal meaning of the idiom in a sentence from 3 possible choices.
The second set of 10 cards asks student to pick the idiom that best goes with the sentences, again from 3 possible choices.
Idioms included in this deck are: all ears, under the weather, when pigs fly, couch potato, between a rock and a hard place, curiosity killed the cat, out of left field, walking on eggshells, over the moon, looking for a needle in a haystack.
About Boom Learning
Boom cards can be assigned via many learning management systems, such as Google Classroom, Schoology, SeeSaw, Canvas, Moodle, Powerschool, Class Dojo, Microsoft Teams, and more.

Understanding similes in English (Set 1) Boom Cards digital activity task cards
By TamiaDesigns
Similes can be tricky for English language learners or students with language learning difficulties to understand and they often need to be specifically introduced to them. In this online, self-checking, activity hosted at Boom Learning℠, students choose the sentence or part of a sentence from the left hand side of the card that best goes with the simile on the right hand side.
There are 16 similes, with at least two different cards for each simile. 12 cards will play in each round, so each round will be slightly different. (Note that if you are using "fast pins", all the cards will be presented in each round.)
Illustrated with photos, rather than clipart, this deck is suitable for all ages of English language learners as it does not look childish. With only one simile per card, this deck should be easier for students than Set 2.
The similes included are: proud as a peacock, dead as a dodo, clear as mud, easy as pie, wise as an owl, weak as a kitten, brave as a lion, flat as a pancake, like a fridge, light as a feather, sleep like a log, fast as lightning, hungry as a horse, sharp as a tack, stiff as a board, eager as a beaver.

Understanding idioms in English (set 4) Boom Cards Digital task cards
By TamiaDesigns
Idioms can be tricky for English language learners or students with language learning difficulties to understand and they often need to be specifically introduced to them. This deck is a followup to sets 1–3 in my store and includes all 32 American English idioms from the first 3 decks. Although the format is basically the same and the same idioms are included, this is not just a compilation of the previous decks into one deck - all the sentences are different from the original decks. It can be used as a review of decks 1-3, or as a standalone activity.
Some cards ask student to identify the literal meaning of the idiom in a sentence. Other cards ask student to pick the idiom that best goes with the sentences. The cards are randomized, so a different selection of 20 out of the 64 cards will be presented in each round. (Please note that if you are assigning the activity via a "fast pin", all 64 cards will be presented to the students!)
The idioms included in this deck are: raining cats and dogs, cut corners, beat around the bush, bite the bullet, a dime a dozen, turn on a dime, wild horses couldn't drag me, get my goat, get your ducks in a row, hit the nail on the head, a piece of cake, think outside the box, all in the same boat, like a fish out of water, break a leg, all bark and no bite, bite off more than you can chew, on top of the world, throw in the towel, let the cat out of the bag, kill two birds with one stone, pie in the sky, all ears, under the weather, when pigs fly, couch potato, between a rock and a hard place, curiosity killed the cat, out of left field, walking on eggshells, over the moon, looking for a needle in a haystack.

Understanding similes in English (Set 2) Boom task cards digital activity
By TamiaDesigns
Similes can be tricky for English language learners or students with language learning difficulties to understand and they often need to be specifically introduced to them. In this online, self-checking, activity hosted at Boom Learning℠, students will see 3 similes and 6 sentences on each card. Their job is to choose the sentences that go best with each simile and drag and drop to match. They must get all 3 right on the card to get the card correct, so this deck is harder than Set 1 that only has one simile per card.
Each round is only 5 cards as that's 15 questions. They will need to play multiple times to see all the similes. Some similes will appear more than once in different sentences to reinforce their meaning.
Illustrated with photos, rather than clipart, this deck is suitable for all ages of English language learners as it does not look childish.
The similes included are: as proud as a peacock, as sick as a dog, as busy as a bee, as tough as nails, as cool as a cucumber, as free as a bird, as easy as pie, as light as a feather, as stiff as a board, as dead as a dodo, like a fish out of water, as wise as an owl, as weak as a kitten, as strong as an ox, as clear as mud, like a fridge, as eager as a beaver, as skinny as a rake, as gentle as a lamb, as hungry as a horse, as warm as toast, as brave as a lion, as fast as lightning, sleep like a log, as slow as molasses, like a sauna, as white as a ghost, as blind as a bat, as proud as a lion, as brave as a lion, as hungry as a lion
