Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Anger Management.

You can use an Anticipation Guide:

  • Before/after introducing new material to tap into prior knowledge
  • Before/after watching a film clip to gauge a reaction
  • Before/after reading a short text to begin a discussion
  • Before/After discussing a topic

ANTICIPATION GUIDES

There is ONE Anticipation Guide that comes in two different variations:

▶️ Variation #1:

Part 1: The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.

Part 2: The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.

▶️ Variation #2: This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.

SELF-ASSESSMENT

This resource offers ONE Anger Management Self-Assessment, prompting students to reflect on their skills using a rating scale: 2 for 'Always,' 1 for 'Sometimes,' and 0 for 'Never.' SEL Writing Prompts: 25 Social Dilemmas for Middle Schoolers

By Betsy Newmeyer

Help your students tackle tough social dilemmas while practicing their writing skills! After each of the 25 social dilemmas is posed, students first sketch, then finish the story with their own solution. These scenarios are a great way to reinforce your PBIS and SEL skills such as empathy and responsible decision-making, especially as Spring Fever sets in and state testing draws nearer.

This resource includes 25 editable Google Slides and 25 printable writing prompts, both in full-page and half-page versions for your convenience. The printable PDF writing prompts include an image, the scenario to be resolved, 3 rectangles for the beginning-middle-end story sketch, and lines to write on.

In my 5th grade classroom, we use these dilemmas to first write, then talk about problems in class or out on the playground. It allows me to see how each student would approach a situation, and we can discuss in depth the ramifications of the choices we make as we solve each problem. The kids particularly enjoyed being allowed to sketch out the beginning, middle, and end of the story before getting down to the writing part. As a teacher, I love that the kids are actively engaged in writing and are practicing key skills such as writing the conclusion to a story and punctuating dialogue. It's another chance for me to reteach or reinforce writing skills in a very low-stakes kind of way.

What's Included?

  • 25 full-page writing prompts (printable PDF)
  • 25 half-page writing prompts (printable PDF with same prompts as the full-page)
  • Editable Google Slides Presentation with all 25 writing prompts
  • Teacher's Guide
