This ESL ELL resource helps to review vocabulary for describing physical features. There are 3 culturally diverse photograph grids for the game “Guess who?” There are “Wanted” poster templates and a “guess the celebrity” project.

It is a great way to get students talking and writing. This is a print and go resource that you can also share in the Google classroom.

This resource can be used for whole class discussion or partner activities. Students get an opportunity to practice the vocabulary within various games and activities. These activities could also be set up into station/center work.

Included:

- Teacher overview and further activity suggestions

-Three culturally diverse panels of photographs for the game Guess who? Photograph panels can be shared with students to play with partners, printed (color) or used for the class to play with a LCD projector.

-Three printable sheets with descriptions for students to match the descriptions to the photographs.

-Handout to help students ask questions for the activity “Twenty Questions”

-Ten hidden celebrity pictures for students to try to identify by asking “Twenty Questions”. Squares are removed as they ask each question.

-Templates for students to create their own “Wanted” posters with descriptions of a friend.

-Suggestions for student projects for students to create their own “Twenty Questions” activity or students can write about their favorite celebrity.

Vocabulary Review:

Physical descriptions/Facial

Present tense verbs

Please note: This resource works best using a projector in class or if students can view copies on Google classroom. Printing the photograph grid in b/w would not work well for the physical descriptions.

Greek and Latin Roots: Root Words Lists & Quizzes for 3rd 4th 5th 6th Grade

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Greek and Latin Roots Words Weekly Lists, Quizzes, and Tests UNIT ONE:

This Latin and Greek Stems and Roots UNIT ONE file includes:

  • Weekly lists (10 words on each list for eight weeks)
  • A mid-week matching quizzes
  • End-of-week tests (which are progressive and include stems from prior weeks)
  • Final test with all 80 stems/roots

The test at the end of each week has 20 questions (except the first week only has 10 because there isn't an established pool to pull additional parts yet). For the ninth week, there is a final test with all 80 Latin and Greek Stems and Roots.

Since each week builds on the previous week, the retention of information remains high. My students will keep a ring with the stems and roots flashcards on them in their desks/backpacks and will add ten new stems each week, so that they can study ALL the stems each week, not just the new ones for that week.

Why should students learn to use Latin and Greek stems and roots?

  • It is part of the COMMON CORE CURRICULUM
  • Latin makes unknown English words more accessible
  • Children who have studied Latin score higher on standardized tests including SAT, ACT, M-CAT
  • It gives children a set of terms to help them unlock unknown words by using word parts
  • Studying common Latin stems helps children with math and science vocabulary

This file is the FIRST UNIT (a total of NINE weeks).
