Narrative Writing | How the Turkey Escaped Thanksgiving Dinner

By Nardine Mettry

An engaging prompt that sets the stage for a hilarious Thanksgiving adventure! The star of the show? A turkey determined to escape its fate! Students will use their creativity to craft a narrative about the turkey's daring escape, the chaos it leaves behind, and the potential consequences (or maybe even a happy ending!)

Make it interesting!

  • How did the turkey manage to escape the Thanksgiving dinner table?
  • Describe the turkey's journey after escaping. Did it encounter any obstacles or helpful allies?
  • What happens to the characters back at the Thanksgiving table? Are they surprised, disappointed, or perhaps secretly relieved?
  • Will the turkey reach freedom, or will it be captured (with a twist, perhaps)?

What to do in class?

  1. Set the Scene: Introduce the "The Great Gobbler Getaway" prompt and discuss the elements of a strong narrative, such as plot, characters, setting, and a clear beginning, middle, and end.
  2. Brainstorming Bonanza: Encourage students to brainstorm ideas for their narratives. They can sketch scenes, jot down character details, and plan the escape route for their feathery friend.
  3. Gobble Gobble Write! Students put pen to paper and craft their Thanksgiving escape stories.
  4. Sharing Time! Students can share their hilarious and creative narratives with the class, sparking laughter and imagination.

Holiday Narrative Writing Prompt Pull Tab Flyers with Word Banks & Google Slides

By Betsy Newmeyer

Get into the holiday season with these no-prep, Holiday Writing Prompt Pull Tab Flyers with accompanying Google Slides & Printable Word Banks. You'll get 6 different holiday flyers: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Easter, each one with a fun character with a big problem and 10 unique narrative writing prompts. That's 60 different holiday writing prompts in all! It’s super easy for new teachers, perfect for sub plans, fun for elementary kids, and allows for student choice.

This resource includes a PDF file with 6 story characters (including color and B&W versions) with 10 writing prompts per character, 3 Word Bank levels with 20 words per level, a blank Word Bank, and a Google Slideshow of the 6 different characters. Each slide includes the color version of the character, a setting, and a song/soundtrack to help set the mood. Appropriate for elementary and middle school students

Holidays included are:

  • Halloween
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas
  • Valentine's Day
  • St. Patrick's Day
  • Easter

Directions:

To use, pick one of the 6 character fliers to print out in either color or B&W and one or more desired word banks. Then students team up, select which prompt they want to write about and a word bank, and that’s it! To really help set the mood, display the selected character from the Google Slides and crank the volume up.

Use With Teams to Encourage Collaboration & Communication!

In my own 5th grade classroom, I ask my students to pair up in 10 teams, which means I have teams of 2s and 3s. Ahead of time, I print out a single copy of one flier and cut the strips apart. I also print a few of each of the word banks. Each team selects a prompt to tear off the page and a word bank. On my interactive TV, I displayed one of the slides and let the music play on a loop. While the kids discuss the prompt with their partners, they cut their word bank words apart and determine which words they will use and how/when.

This resource includes:

  • 6 Character photos (included both in color and a similar photo in B&W) with 10 different writing prompts for students to choose from. The writing prompts for each character are the same for both the black-and-white image page and the color image page. That's a grand total of 60 different writing prompts!

  • Word banks: 3 different levels of word banks with 20 words per bank. 1 blank word bank in case you want to write in your own vocabulary words.

  • Google slideshow with 6 slides that include the color image for each character, a background setting image, and a song or soundtrack to help set the mood.
