Opinion Writing: Do Animals Have Feelings? Graphic Organizer & Writing Paper

By E•Fish•ient Teaching

It's time to debate emotions! Ignite thoughtful discussions and sharpen opinion-writing skills with this captivating resource, Do Animals Have Feelings? This comprehensive writing piece is designed to encourage 3rd-grade students to explore the intriguing question of whether animals experience emotions, making it an ideal addition to your language arts curriculum. It is great to do with Valentine's Day as the theme is love, but can be use all throughout the year.

Key Features

  1. Critical Thinking: Challenge your students to think critically about the emotions of animals. Have your students examine evidence, consider different perspectives and form well-supported opinions.
  2. Develop Argumentative Writing Skills: Students will develop persuasive writing skills as they support their stance on whether animals have feelings.
  3. Research Opportunities: Depending on your students skill, encourage independent research skills and strengthen their ability to gather and evaluate information.
  4. Writing Process Support: Two different graphic organizers are included with this writing prompt. Help them organize their thoughts before they start writing.
  5. Real-World Relevance: Connect the writing piece to real-world examples and current events. Foster a sense of empathy as students discuss the ethical treatment of animals.

Versatile Use:

  • Make this work for your classroom! Make it as challenging or easy as you need.

Younger Classrooms: Have students discuss and debate the topic
before writing their essay. Students will use their knowledge or
experiences with animals to write their essay.

Older Classrooms: Have students research the topic to present
evidence within their essay. Use animals behaviors as evidence based
off what they have researched.

What's Included?

2 different graphic organizers where students can formulate their thoughts. One graphic organizer is more generic and tailored for the lower level classroom. The second graphic organizer would help students with their research and organizing their evidence. Also included is 4 different writing pages to have students write their final essay on. 2 of the writing pages include a place for students to add a drawing with their essay.

This is a great opinion writing piece as students will argue why or why not students can feel love or emotions. They need to have an opening statement, three reasons, and then a closing statement.

What are teachers saying about this Opinion Writing?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ To Serve With Love says, "This is such a cute writing activity for February! I appreciate the addition of the writing paper, too. This can be used in many ways!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ms. Toni says, "This was exactly what I was looking for! I have several students who have difficulty with expessing their opinions on paper and this topic kept them engaged. Thank you for creating it!"

20 Questions Game - French Valentine's Day - La Saint Valentin

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a fun game to get your students speaking French? Use this game to have students practice forming questions and speaking French using vocabulary for Valentine's Day.

Included:

French and English version

French only version

Have students work in small groups of 2-4 or project the game and do a whole class activity.

This game includes 40 words. Many of the words will be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice forming questions, but also to build vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words.

One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word.

EST-CE QUE…….

… tu es une personne?

… tu es un animal?

… tu es un minéral?

… tu es un endroit?

… tu es un aliment?

… tu es une plante?

… tu es un objet?

The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: OUI - NON - PARFOIS - RAREMENT - GÉNÉRALEMENT - PEUT-ÊTRE - CELA DÉPEND - PROBABLEMENT

Alternative game play:

To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.

Valentine's Day Math Mystery- Case of Cupid's Stolen Arrows (Geometry Topics)

By Miss Yous Clues and Resources

This is a Valentine's Day themed math mystery that is best for grades 4 & 5. The geometry topics focus on types of angles, (acute, right, obtuse or straight angle), types of lines (parallel, perpendicular or intersecting), symmetry, finding the measure of an unknown angle and classifying angles by side measure (equilateral, isosceles or scalene). This product aligns with the 4th grade Engage NY Module 4 or Eureka math. While this product product specifically aligns with grade 4 standards, it would be a great review for 5th grade students nearing state test time; it would be a fun, engaging review that could be done as a whole group or independently. As for 4th grade students, this product would be great for a whole group review, independent fast finisher work, review prior to the end of module test or center work.

Students will read the scenario in the beginning to find out what the problem is, read over the suspect list and solve five clues to narrow down the suspect to find the suspect that committed the crime. My students love it when they're allowed to mark their own guess prior to completing this!

Valentine's Day Bookmarks to Color: Editable & Customizable Seasonal Gifts

By Betsy Newmeyer

Celebrate Valentine's Day with a sweet (and inexpensive) gift that inspires reading: a bookmark customized with each student's name on it! These ready-to-print or editable bookmarks are great time-fillers, perfect for a relaxing social-emotional learning activity, and can even be used on a bulletin board or as desk name tags. This resource is a 23 pages Google Slides document with 4 bookmarks per page. The first 10 slides include the text "Happy Valentine's Day" and are ready to print, the next 10 pages can be customized with student names, while the last 3 pages include writing prompts for students to respond to.

Editing and printing these bookmarks is very easy. Just double click where it says name and type in a student's name. Then select your preferred font and color, and stretch the Word Art box to your desired size.

In my own classroom, I like to create double-sided bookmarks and use them as name tags. On the front side, I customize the bookmarks with each student's name. then print a writing prompt on the backside. Once kids have answered their prompt and colored their bookmark in, I tape just the top down to the desk. This way, students can flip up the name tag to see their writing on the other side. This is really great to do before parent-teacher conferences.

Perfect for . . .

  • SEL
  • Fast finishers
  • Name tags
  • Bulletin Board
  • Time filler
  • Inspiring reading all year long

Valentine's Day Social Emotional Activities: Social Problem Solving Scenarios

By The Responsive Educator

Mix up your Valentine's Day classroom routine with our Valentine's Day Social Problem Solving Activity, designed to nurture social and emotional growth in your students.

Swap out the usual holiday routine with these fun social problem-solving scenarios. They're the perfect way to add a touch of social-emotional learning to your Valentine's Day celebration, making it not just sweet but also full of valuable lessons.

CASEL 5 Social-Emotional Competencies: Our scenarios are thoughtfully crafted to ignite discussions around the CASEL 5 social-emotional competencies – Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.

What's Included

  • 3 social problem-solving worksheets, each with 5 different Valentine's Day-related social situations
  • both color and black and white versions

How it Works

  1. Decide if you want students to work independently, with a partner, or in groups. Or have students work alone and then share answers in a class discussion.
  2. Students read each situation, deciding whether the child in the scenario made a good or poor choice. This process encourages critical thinking and reflection on social behaviors.
  3. For good choices, students explain why the decision was positive. For poor choices, students propose alternative ways to handle the situation, sparking meaningful discussions around social skills and empathy.

Sample Valentine's Day Scenarios

  • Michael's Decision: Michael receives a Valentine's Day card from a disliked classmate. He crumples it without acknowledgment.

  • Alex's Response: Overhearing classmates making fun of a homemade Valentine's Day card, Alex joins in to fit in.

  • Casey's Observation: Casey notices a friend looking sad on Valentine's Day and chooses to spend time talking and offering support.
