"A Christmas Carol": Activities and Vocabulary Bundle

Engaging activities for literature:

"A Christmas Carol" Vocabulary: Students will find the given words within the novel "A Christmas Carol" and record the sentence in which the word can be found. I had the students complete these sheets after reading the section of the book.

Creative activity: Students participate in an activity where they will write and illustrate their stories of Christmas past, present, and yet to come, in a way that is similar to what happens to Scrooge in the novel.

Students loved sharing their stories and hearing the hopes their classmates have for their futures.

As a culminating activity: Students read or watch A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, my students read A Christmas Carol and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas, for an engaging activities before the holiday. They will practice comparing and contrasting in three different ways, including an exciting snowball fight.

Expanding Paragraph Practice: A Foldable Graphic Organizer For Adding Details

Using Step Up To Writing? Help your students pack paragraphs full of juicy details with a printable (and digital) color-coded, accordion-style foldable graphic organizer. Each of the 20 expandable paragraphs includes a topic sentence and concluding sentence. Students complete and expand the paragraph by adding and elaborating on supporting details. This resource is the perfect companion to a Step Up To Writing or other color-based system. This resource includes both printable version as well as no-prep digital options to make differentiating for your diverse learners easier than ever.

This resource includes a PDF file with both the printable B&W and color-coded version, as well as digital documents for both Google Slides (B&W & color) and Google Docs, allowing you to differentiate and customize the learning experience for your students. The PDF file also includes Some of the paragraphs are very simple and include fill in the blank areas for students to tailor their paragraphs to their own likes and interests. Other paragraphs are written at a higher level and might include opportunities for further research.

Differentiation Options:

  • No time to prep? Use the Google Slides or Google Docs version and assign it through Google Classroom or similar program. 
  • Students need visual cues? Print in color the color coded version of the resource or use highlighters to color the graphic organizer in.
  • Need to use speech to text? Assign the Google Doc version to your students. 
  • Want a hands-on option for kinesthetic and tactile learners? Select a color-coded paragraph to print. Students can cut the pieces apart and then work together to fill in and organize their ideas. 

To Prepare Your Physical or Hands-On Resource: 

  • Select the paragraph(s) you would like to use to print out and copy.
  • Students will fold the topic sentence back on the first dotted line.
  • Students will fold the rest of the paragraph back and forth, accordion-style, folding at each dotted line.

To Prepare Your Digital Resource: 

  • Select a paragraph from either the digital files or use the one-click copy links.
  • Assign the document to your students through Google Classroom or similar system.
