FREE Figurative Language Bell Ringer Warm-Ups: Similes and Metaphors

This Figurative Language Bell Ringer Warm-Up is FREE and includes TWO WEEKS of warm-ups! You will find anchor charts, daily warm-up activities for similes and metaphors, an answer key, and instructions and links for using this file in Google Slides.

DAILY Figurative Language includes two weeks of no prep printable activities, two reference pages related to metaphors and similes, and an answer key.

This free figurative language product came out of a larger figurative language product that is designed for an entire year that can also be used at any point in the year because of the layout (each figure of speech shows up once every eight weeks and then repeats until the final 14 weeks, where figures of speech are combined).

The paid figurative language product includes 190 days (38 weeks) of figurative language activities. It is a NO PREP packet that is designed to print and use immediately as a warm-up, homework, or an early finisher activity.

Like the freebie, each figurative language activity is designed to last 3-6 minutes. The product is common core aligned for 3rd-6th grade and will develop your student's figurative language skills!

The paid product includes metaphors, similes, idioms, hyperboles, proverbs and adages, personification, alliteration, and onomatopoeia.

** Are you looking for a resource to teach students to understand temporal concepts or are you Teaching sequence of events, Following directions or Sentence writing?  These syntax activities will teach your students how to understand 25, higher level temporal concepts (prior to, simultaneous, thereafter). It is a simple drill in which students are provided with a small scenario containing the word and asked to determine the meaning of the concept.**

You will receive a 26 Slide Lesson which contains the lesson and one Assessment worksheet to print.

The Lesson works well with older students (Grades 6- 10)  or with students who have mild  cognitive delays yet good language skills. An independent lesson will take about 30 minutes however if you are using it as a teaching tool during instruction the lesson can easily fill 60 minutes with breaks in between for group discussion. In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the different family members. Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language and after learning the English word, students will complete the family vocabulary review where they will be required to fill in the English and their native language family member vocabulary word. I tend to use that section as a quiz. I will read the word aloud and the students will then write the English word and the word in their native language. Pictures are included for each vocabulary word to help students make connections to who each person is. Students can do this independently or with help. Students will be required to answer a few comprehension questions that relate with who their family members are, what they like to do with them, etc.

In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the different hobbies. Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language and after learning the English word, students will complete the hobby vocabulary review where they will be required to fill in the English and their native language hobby vocabulary word. I tend to use that section as a quiz. I will read the word aloud and the students will then write the English word and the word in their native language. Pictures are included for each vocabulary word to help students make connections to what each item is. Students can do this independently or with help. Students will be required to answer a few comprehension questions that relate with what their favorite hobby is, what their least favorite hobby is, etc.

2. Adjective Sorting Game

2 ways to play:

* a sit-down activity - print out, cut up

Children draw an adjective from a receptacle and place it on the right plate.

* a kinetic activity (great for lively classes) -print out two sets, cut up, laminate

• divide students into two teams
• place the plates at one end of the classroom and the receptacles with adjectives at the opposite end of the classroom
• children pick an adjective and run and place it on the correct plate and run back
• they high-five the next team member in line and only then can the next player pick an adjective and run to the plates
• the competition ends when all the adjectives have been placed
• the team which scores the most points (= placed the most adjectives right) wins

5. Board Game

You need counters and dices. To be played in pairs or small groups. If you teach a larger group, print out a few of them.

3 ways to play:

* pupils say the comparative and superlative of the adjective

* pupils form a comparative / superlative and add a suitable noun

* pupils form a sentence

If they make a mistake or don't know, they lose their turn and have to return back to the square they previously stood on.

6. Tic Tac Toe

To be played in pairs. In order to write their Xs and Os, pupils have to write the

comparative and superlative on the line. If they don't know, they have to choose a different square. If they make a mistake, they lose their turn.
