Science of Reading Assessment Tool Tracking Sheet

I created a French SOR Assessment tool to cover all the sounds for students K to 3 in the French Immersion setting (Grade 4-6 Core French) for easy assessment and evaluation. Once I got started on my own testing, I realized I could use a quick look tracking sheet.

I learned how to make the boxes editable and hope it works out for you. (I did ask a few colleagues to try it out first). I am offering it FREE for now.

How to use this product:

1. Open the resource in your preferred program (Adobe, etc)
2. Fill in student names for your classroom(s)
3. Print tracking sheets out for your own students

Make your ESL classroom look different from a regular education room by considering these multilingual commonly used words in the classroom.

Each label takes up 1/4 of a page so they are nice and big, but not too obtrusive. There are 116 words for a total of 29 pages. Check out the preview of some pages in the pictures. They each feature the English verb in big, bold black letters while the other languages are in a smaller font and in different colors. Languages included are Chinese (simplified/Red), Arabic (Violet), Russian (Green), and Spanish (Brown). To help aid meaning, I've included colored pictures and illustrations.

How to use:

1. Ich habe..., wer hat...? Card Game

Print out, cut up. It can be played in small or large groups. Hand out all of

the cards to pupils, each has roughly the same number of cards. The student

with the 1st card starts by asking Wer hat... The pupil with the matching

card replies Ich habe... and asks Wer hat...? The game finishes when pupils get to the last card.

During the activity teacher monitors the correct use of articles.

2. Cut and Paste Picture Dictionary

Each pupil gets 1 set of picture cards and 1 set of word cards. Pupils cut them

out. They can either glue them onto the provided sheets or in their notebooks.

Make sure they glue the picture and word cards in the correct article

category.

This is a set of 12 color mini-posters in Spanish that you can use to decorate your classroom or bulletin board in a fun, colorful, and educational manner. I use this product with my 5th graders, but teaching cultural diversity, acceptance and global awareness are universal. This project-based resource would work for students in grades 5 through 9.

Directions

Materials Needed:

• One of the 10 worksheets or the editable template where you add your own words
• A regular six-sided die
• Colors
• Optional: A device with a QR code scanner (phone, tablet, etc.)

Rolling the Die:

• Students roll a six-sided die to determine which color word they read in Spanish.
• Students can also scan the QR code on the worksheet using a device with a QR code scanner to access a virtual dice roller.

Reading the Word:

• Students match the number rolled with the corresponding color word on their worksheet.
• Students read aloud the color in Spanish to practice pronunciation.

Marking Progress:

• Once students read a word, they should shade in color the box using the color that matches the Spanish word read.
• If students roll a number they have already completed, they should roll again until they land on a new word.
• Students continue rolling and reading until they have completed all the words on their worksheet.

This English Second Language ESL ELL EAL resource helps to review basic personal questions. This resource has lots of low prep activities. Students can interview their classmates to get extra speaking practice. Next they can either write about the classmate or about themselves with several templates to pick from (All about me!). Finally there are 24 personal basic profiles given with 3 suggested games and activities for more speaking practice.

In addition to the pre-designed templates, there are blank options which gives more flexibility to stronger classes. There are 22 interview questions included which students can use for support while writing a paragraph. There is a simplified version also included.

With this game, learners have less than 15 seconds to race against the clock and translate the people-related term represented by the highlighted word. Here's the twist: The possible responses start disappearing after time. Incorrect answers lose points and correct answers earn points. Flip Card decks are so handy for the classroom. I use them in small group work to assess and teach specific sounds, combinations of CV sounds, and to decode words together. The large format cards are great for my Grade 1 students as we can do a lot of whole class instruction and the students have so much fun coming up to the front of the class to come up with the 'really hard' CV combinations for their peers to read out loud.

Use the smaller sets for learning centres, individual work, and pair work as your students get familiar with their phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. My students happen to love 'testing' each other by flipping the cards, saying the sound, and then waiting as their 'students' write what they think is the correct letter on their whiteboards!

We love them so much as we can sneak in a little decoding and Science of Reading whenever we get a minute or two of time to fill.

Any French educator who is wanting to practice, assess, and deepen their students understanding of sound work in French. This item is suitable for French Immersion, Core French, and French instruction at any level.
