How to Catch a Snowman by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton, is a fictional winter story about kids trying to catch a clever snowman. The book lends itself to many ways to integrate STEAM, ELA, Math, and even Science activities to accompany the book. In this product, there are activities centered around STEAM, and ELA. You will need to get some supplies for students to build for the STEAM part and you can either build (or buy) a snowman yourself for the kids to try to trap or have them build one. (I would recommend things like bathroom paper tubes, pipe cleaners, and things like that).

Students will first read the book as a whole class and then focus on some story elements from the story. Once they have completed that, they will begin creating a plan to catch the snowman! (I would recommend having the students in groups). Then once students have completed their plan, they can then begin building their trap to catch the snowman. They will then test it and once they test it, they will complete the form that has them reflect on their build.

I always begin the activities the week before Christmas break as a way to help keep students engaged during the crazy week as they get ready for Christmas. I then return to the book when we get back from break to help refocus my students into the routine of school. I hope you enjoy these activities.

Students get an opportunity to practice the new vocabulary both orally and written with flashcards and Questions du jour. This resource can be used for whole class discussion, partner activity or divided into stations.

Info about what's included (in zipped folder):

• a TO SANTA template
• a TO SANTA template with writing help
• a FROM SANTA template - two versions with different introductions

All with 2 background options each.

The second you’ll find in the zipped folder you purchase is access to mailing labels, of which there are 3 to choose from (my creative original, a general one, and the USPS official one). You have an Avery labels set that’s blank, and another with the labels on them.

Note: Only the USPS official address can be mailed - the other two are for fun but won't necessarily go anywhere unless you plan it some other way. There's also no guarantee the USPS-sent mail will get an answer as they depend on others to step up. More about that here.

In summary:

• blank Avery template
• prepared Avery template
• 3 mailing label options

About the labels: (5160 labels, set of 30)

You can simply print the labels with my provided template, but you’ll preferably want to purchase the peel-and-stick version from the Avery store to easily adhere to envelopes. Or you can adhere with the printed version without the peel-and-stick, using glue or tape. I highly recommend using the p&s version so you can print right onto them. Or simply WRITE the addresses by hand!
